Industrial Designer

Purpose

BD UCC is establishing Industrial Designer capability for user-centered product design across its platforms. This role bridges aesthetics, ergonomics, usability, and engineering feasibility to deliver products that are intuitive, differentiated, and manufacturable. The individual will embed industrial design best practices into the product development lifecycle – from early-stage innovation through new product development.

• Serve as the industrial design subject matter expert across all four UCC platforms.
• Establish best practices, design standards, and a cohesive UCC design language.
• Plan and conduct generative user research to understand needs, workflows, and use environments.
• Synthesize insights from observation, interviews, and usability feedback to inform design direction and customer requirements.
• Lead concept generation from user and market insights, translating user needs into product form through sketching, rendering, and prototyping.
• Collaborate with Human Factors Engineering through generative, formative, and summative usability studies.
• Partner with mechanical engineering and manufacturing to ensure design intent translates into producible components.

• BS in Industrial Design, Product Design, or closely related engineering discipline.
• 8+ years of professional industrial design experience.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive design decisions with minimal oversight.
• Strong cross‑functional collaboration skills; able to influence without authority across multiple business units.
• Strong hand‑sketching and visual communication skills.
• Proficiency in 3‑D CAD modeling (e.g., Solid Works, Fusion 360, Creo).
• Proficiency in visualization/rendering software (e.g., Key Shot).
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Illustrator, Photoshop).
• Hands‑on prototyping experience (3D printing, foam/clay modeling, soft‑goods mockups).
• Working knowledge of manufacturing processes: injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, over‑molding, mechanical assembly.
• Experience in consumer products, integrated sensors, wearables, or smart clothing.
• Experience with user research methods such as contextual inquiry, ethnography, and usability testing.

Work Shift:

Minimum 4 days per week in‑office presence required.
