Job Summary

Paraprofessional, Special Education Adaptive (EBD) - HMES — Newton County Schools. This position is located at Heard Mixon Elementary School, Covington, GA. The paraprofessional reports to the building Principal and is responsible for providing physical and instructional support to students with disabilities, helping them progress in the general curriculum and achieve IEP goals.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree or two years (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) of college OR HS diploma/GED with successful completion of the Georgia Paraprofessional Certification Test.
  • Valid Paraprofessional Certificate.
  • Ability to work well with adults and students, and possess good communication skills.
  • Well organized and have good time-management skills.
Description of Duties
  • Be present at work every day, on time, and perform duties as assigned effectively and efficiently.
  • Comply with school, system, state and federal regulations and policies, including the Professional Standards Commission Code of Ethics.
  • Provide instructional support to individuals and/or small groups of students with disabilities in the special education or general education setting as assigned by the teacher or related services provider.
  • Demonstrate fair and effective classroom management skills and assist with supervision of students to ensure safety and adherence to school rules and regulations.
  • Perform data collection and routine record-keeping as instructed by the teacher using techniques and procedures acquired through professional learning, including the Georgia Alternate Assessment Student Portfolio.
  • Assist the teacher in performing necessary clerical tasks that may include ordering and inventory of classroom equipment and materials.
  • Maintain proficient instructional technology skills, including all Microsoft Office applications, and comply with system technology policies and procedures.
  • Participate in professional learning as required by the school system and attend faculty meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Maintain paraprofessional certification as required by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
  • Demonstrate positive working relationships with others, take direction readily in a cooperative manner from the supervisor, and exhibit a flexible, cooperative, progressive and hardworking attitude.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for instruction, class displays, bulletin boards and other instructional activities (e.g., flash cards, charts, transparencies).
  • Ensure that the classroom, equipment and other resources are maintained in safe and sanitary condition.
  • Monitor students before and after school and during other non-instructional transition periods as assigned.
  • Communicate with students, parents, faculty and staff using appropriate verbal and written communication skills and exhibit fundamentals of good public customer service.
  • Maintain current Mindset:
    De-escalation/Physical Restraint Certification when required.
  • Be physically able to perform tasks involving light to heavy lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling and must walk/stand a minimum of six (6) hours with breaks.
  • Physically assist students as needed to maintain essential life-functions and to participate as much as possible in the full range of educational and developmental opportunities; may perform or supervise catheterization, tube feeding or any other health-related tasks that may lawfully be performed by a lay person appropriately trained in such procedures. Maintain current CPR and basic First Aid Certification.
  • Perform other such duties as assigned by the Principal.
