Structured Literacy Support Coach - Elementary

Number Of Days: 190

Objective:
To increase student literacy achievement by supporting and improving teacher effectiveness

This is a state-funded position, and there is no guarantee it will continue.

Required Qualifications:

  • Holds a valid Georgia Teaching or Service certification at level 4 or higher
  • Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or Special Education or related field
  • Advanced preparation in Reading/Literacy through completion of Reading Endorsement, Dyslexia Endorsement or independent training program approved by International Dyslexia Association
  • Minimum of five years elementary teaching experience, including evidence-based word recognition and comprehension instruction

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of reading processes, acquisition, assessment and instruction
  • Thorough understanding of systematic, explicit instructional practices
  • Thorough understanding of instructional coaching approaches and strategies for teaching adult learners
  • Thorough understanding of scientific reading research and its application to effective classroom instruction, structure, and practices, as well as interventions
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate ability to attend to details and to efficiently multi-task
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Georgia Standards of Excellence
  • Demonstrate knowledge of research-based instructional strategies
  • Demonstrate ability to model and assist teachers in implementing instructional strategies in ELA and reading
  • Demonstrate knowledge of available instructional interventions and the ability to supervise and evaluate their effective implementation
  • Demonstrate ability to interpret and implement federal laws, state rules, and local policies
  • Demonstrate an ability to collect, analyze, and interpret qualitative and quantitative data
  • Demonstrate professional interpersonal skills with school staff, central office staff, parents/guardians, students, and community
  • Demonstrate ability to work with limited supervision
  • Demonstrate an excellent attendance record

Description of

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works in designated schools to support the Georgia Early Literacy Act
  • Attends all required GaDOE professional learning
  • Assists school leadership with aligning school wide systems, processes and resources to structured literacy as defined by the Georgia Literacy Act
  • Assists school administrators with providing regular and user-friendly data reports
  • Assists K-3 teachers in addressing grade specific curriculum by developing an effective school-wide literacy plan and providing strategies for monitoring the plan's implementation
  • Collaborates with Regional structured literacy support coaches to design and conduct professional development to meet the varied needs of K-3 teachers
  • Facilitates and leads structured coaching cycles with teachers, fostering a collaborative and growth-orientated environment that includes goal setting, modeling, lesson observation, constructive feedback and reflective discussions to enhance literacy instruction and student outcomes
  • Provides clear, practical, timely and candid written and oral feedback to teachers about their instruction
  • Conferences with teachers identified for additional support to create, implement and monitor goals and plans for improving practice
  • Meets regularly with principal, other school-based coaches, and K-3 teachers to review all formative and summative data (including required screeners) and make recommendations for adjustments in instructional practices
  • Maintains an organized system for documenting coaching services
  • Performs other duties that are appropriate for this position, in compliance with the Georgia Department of Education's Literacy Coach Assurances
