Experienced Finishing Manager with over 40 years of expertise leading finishing operations in cabinet manufacturing, architectural millwork, furniture, and woodworking environments. Responsible for directing all aspects of the finishing department, including production scheduling, quality control, personnel management, training, purchasing, safety compliance, and process improvement. Provides hands-on leadership while ensuring projects are completed on time, within specifications, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all daily finishing department operations, including sanding, staining, sealing, color matching, spraying, touch-up, and final quality inspections.
- Coordinate workflow and production schedules to meet customer requirements and shipping deadlines while maintaining quality standards.
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate finishing personnel, fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Establish and maintain finishing standards, processes, and best practices to ensure consistency and customer satisfaction.
- Troubleshoot finish-related issues and implement corrective actions to minimize rework and maximize productivity.
- Develop samples, prototypes, custom color matches, and finishing processes for new and existing projects.
- Maintain formula records, finish samples, and job documentation to ensure consistency and repeatability.
- Manage purchasing and inventory of finishing materials, equipment, supplies, and consumables.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers while evaluating new products, technologies, and finishing methods.
- Collaborate closely with production, project management, quality control, and customer service teams to ensure smooth workflow and communication.
- Monitor department performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement process improvements that increase efficiency and reduce waste.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, HAZMAT, and company safety regulations, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of finishing materials.
- Oversee maintenance and proper operation of spray equipment, spray booths, sanding equipment, drying systems, and related finishing machinery.
- Participate in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and workforce planning to meet changing production demands.
