Get hands-on experience maintaining and repairing HVAC/R systems in supermarkets, convenience stores, and cold storage facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Perform prescribed, routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems and self- contained temperature-controlled merchandisers.
  • Match customer needs with potential sales opportunities and complete rapid/accurate diagnosis.
  • Manage truck inventory, order, receive, and bill parts responsibly with minimal waste; maintain assigned vehicle and conduct required maintenance on schedule.
  • Complete documentation and electronic communication accurately, professionally, and timely; use hand-held device for paperwork and invoicing.
  • Systematically use mirror and flashlight to inspect joints, install PVC drain pipe, set and trim cases, install glass doors and frames, use temperature sensors, brazing and soldering techniques, and determine proper coil layout.
  • Accurately identify pipe size and fittings; perform refrigerant and oil conversions, test oil during conversion, and electric weld various metals and joint types.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and size thermostatic expansion valves.
  • Use pressure regulators, refrigerant flow controls, TEV troubleshooting and replacement, and trace complex schematic diagrams.
  • Demonstrate understanding of low/high pressure oil systems, split condensing/low ambient controls, refrigerated equipment startup, EMS controls, new retail store refrigeration startup, air flow testing, motor VFDs, defrost types, recovery setup, torch setup, compressor parameters, conventional refrigeration layout, parallel rack layout, and advanced wiring diagrams (CO2 preferred).
  • Work with gauge, scale, recovery, ECM, shaded pole, PSC, three-phase motors, compressor parameters, oil differential pressure valves, and oil level controls.
  • Detect and repair leaks on conventional systems and parallel racks; solder with copper-to-brass and copper-to-steel; conduct compressor diagnosis and replacements; troubleshoot complex service calls; check and adjust oil-mgmt systems.
  • Serve as a technical resource to other technicians and lead HVAC/R preventive-maintenance programs.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

Formal Education Requirement:
High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Level: HVAC-R Technical School Degree.

  • Minimum experience:

    External candidates – 7 years in the field or 5 years with certification from a technical school;
    Internal candidates – 3 years as a certified technician with completion of on-the-job training and skills assessment.
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record per fleet policy.
  • Physically able to walk long distances, lift and carry up to fifty pounds repeatedly, climb ladders, work at high elevations, and perform bench and crouch work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, detail-oriented, highly motivated.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and basic maintenance knowledge.
  • Willing to work nights and/or weekends as required.
  • Working knowledge of basic refrigeration or commercial refrigeration/HVAC preferred.
  • Strong leadership and business acumen.
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification.
  • Superior decision-making ability and paperwork skills.
