Acquisitions Librarian

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Collections, the Acquisitions Librarian leads the acquisition strategy for purchased and licensed content, streamlines procurement processes, manages the collections budget, fosters vendor relationships, addresses order and payment issues, and leads a small staff.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA‑accredited program or equivalent terminal degree.
  • Experience in acquisitions, including procurement of print and digital materials.
  • Experience leading, supervising, or mentoring others.
  • Knowledge of Integrated Library Management Systems (e.g., Ex Libris Alma).
  • Strong communication, analytical, and project‑management skills.
  • Knowledge of copyright and rights management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with data/metadata standards such as COUNTER or MARC.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Power BI.
  • Understanding of open access trends and scholarly publishing services.
  • Ability to navigate trade agreements and vendor negotiations.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage acquisitions activities, including procurement of print, digital, and streaming resources.
  • Design and implement effective workflows, incorporating current technologies and standards.
  • Support collections budget management and maintain accurate acquisitions data.
  • Hire, train, and evaluate staff, coordinate workflows, and set performance goals.
  • Collaborate with vendors and publishers to negotiate favorable terms and resolve order issues.
  • Work closely with internal departments (Collections Coordinators, User Services, Cataloging, etc.) to ensure seamless cooperation.
  • Participate in library-wide planning, governance, and professional development activities.
  • Engage in research and scholarly endeavors related to acquisition practices.
