GENERAL STATEMENT

The student teaching internship is designed to be the culminating professional clinical experience for candidates in teacher education. The primary purpose of the student teaching experience is to provide interns with a carefully mediated experience to help them develop and enhance the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to have a positive impact on student learning and development.

The internship is a professional development experience during which the intern works in a public school setting with students. Interns assume major responsibility for the full range of teaching in an approved school setting under the guidance of qualified personnel in Fairfield County School District.

Interns attend all parent teacher conferences when applicable, communicate effectively with parents and leadership regarding student achievement, attend, participate, and contribute to all IEP meetings when applicable, serve as an exemplary role model at all times, and ensure that various instructional strategies are executed to encourage academic growth in diverse learners.

Interns carry out all additional duties—including lunch, bus, hall, morning activities—as directed by school administration and attend required professional development that benefits FCSD and its students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED

Physical Requirements

Requires light work involving walking or standing most of the time and exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis.

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable characteristics of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication

Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, receive assignments from supervisors, and give instruction to students.

Language Ability

Requires the ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, curriculum materials, texts, computer manuals, etc.; enter data into computers; prepare reports, records, teaching materials, correspondence with proper formatting, punctuation, spelling and grammar; and communicate with poise and confidence.

Intelligence

Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems, interpret instructions, apply influence systems in classroom teaching, make independent judgments, acquire knowledge on related topics, and comprehend and implement basic office machinery functions.

Verbal Aptitude

Requires delivering information, explaining procedures, following oral and written instructions, counseling and teaching students, and communicating effectively with diverse audiences.

Numerical Aptitude

Requires addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, decimals, and time calculations; practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.

Form/Spatial Aptitude

Requires the ability to inspect items for shape, size and read visual information.

Motor Coordination

Requires rapid and accurate coordination of hands and eyes in use of office equipment.

Manual Dexterity

Requires handling of computer keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, switches with minimal eye/hand coordination.

Color Discrimination

Requires ability to differentiate between colors and shades.

Interpersonal Temperament

Requires coping with people beyond giving/receiving instructions and adapting under stress, with awareness of potential danger or risk.

Physical Communication

Requires the ability to talk and hear, including telephone communication.
