Purpose Statement

The Life Skills Para educator assists, tutors, and trains students with significant disabilities in classroom or similar learning environments; provides personal care assistance; and performs classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process. This role reports to the Building Principal.

Essential Functions
  • Administers, under supervision, assistance (e.g., suctioning, toileting, diapering) to support students with significant cognitive and/or physical needs, including medically fragile students, and to develop daily living activities and behavior skills.
  • Assists students with disabilities under the teacher’s direction (e.g., reading to students, arts and crafts, classroom activities, individual assignments, accompanying student to job site) to enable participation in academic and functional (life skills) activities.
  • Attends meetings (e.g., inservice training, workshops, IEPs) to obtain skills and convey information about student needs.
  • Collaborates with teachers and staff to provide efficient, necessary, and appropriate assistance to students.
  • Confers with teachers (special education and/or mainstream) to assist in evaluating progress and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Instructs students with disabilities one-on-one or in small groups (e.g., math, reading, behavior, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills) to support progress toward IEP goals.
  • Maintains instructional materials and student files to ensure availability and reliability of information.
  • Modifies instructional materials or provides accommodations under the direction of a teacher or Case Manager in accordance with the student’s IEP.
  • Monitors students in various settings (library, field trips, classroom activities, lunchroom, bus, job sites) to maintain a safe, positive learning environment.
  • Records observations and incidents for documentation and communication of educational and functional progress.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff regarding student educational progress.
Other Functions
  • Assists other personnel as required to support an efficient and effective work environment.
Qualifications Requirements:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills:

operate standard office equipment; prepare and maintain accurate records; follow safety practices and procedures; administer basic first aid. Knowledge: basic math; read procedures; write routine documents; understand multi-step instructions; concepts of grammar, spelling, punctuation; cultural differences; health standards and hazards; recordkeeping. Abilities: schedule activities, gather data, work with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, communicate effectively, adapt to changing priorities, organize tasks, work as part of a team, and problem-solve with data and equipment.

Ability to work with a variety of individuals and to handle frequent interruptions with patience and compassion.

Responsibility

Under direct supervision using standardized procedures; provide information and/or advisory support; operate within a defined budget. There is potential to significantly impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine motor dexterity. Typical distribution: 20% sitting, 50% walking, 30% standing. Work is performed with minimal temperature variation and some exposure to risk of injury or illness.

Experience and Education

Required Testing

District Proficiency Test or AA Degree or 60 college/university credits.

First Aid and CPR; M.A.N.D.T. Training;
Bloodborne Pathogens Training & Testing;
Diabetes Training & Testing;
Homeless Training & Testing; 20 hours District Approved Para educator Training.

Clearances

Criminal Justice Fingerprint / Background Clearance.
