Agency Overview

The Ohio Housing Finance Agency (OHFA) offers affordable housing opportunities for Ohioans from rental assistance to home ownership. It provides access to financial resources for the development and management of affordable housing services. The Agency’s programs serve first‑time home buyers, renters, senior citizens and other populations with special needs who otherwise might not be able to afford quality housing.

Job Description

What You’ll Do as a Housing Examiner:

  • Travel throughout Ohio to conduct physical compliance inspections of properties in the field.
  • Complete file inspections and audits either in the field or in the office.
  • Review tenant files for income and household composition requirements under multiple affordable housing funding guidelines.

Position Notes
  • Columbus‑based employees must report to OHFA’s offices located at 2600 Corporate Exchange Drive, Columbus, OH 43231.
  • The nature of the duties may require working in the office 80% of the time and in the field 20% of the time or vice‑versa, depending on the season.
  • Management will determine the balance of time spent in‑office versus in‑field to ensure required inspections and audits are completed.
  • Duties may be performed anywhere in Ohio.
  • When completing field work, staff may use a state vehicle for work‑related purposes.
Classification Specific Notes
  • During the first year, Housing Examiners train with experienced staff.
  • Field work is physically demanding: inspections of interiors and exteriors, climbing stairs, opening windows, stooping to view ovens, walking around buildings, in all weather conditions.
  • Housing Examiners must hold or be in pursuit of the following credentials:
    Specialist in Housing Credit Management (SHCM), Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP), Novogradac Property Compliance Certification (NPCC), or Tax Credit Specialist (TCS).
Qualifications
  • 12 months experience as Housing Examiner Trainee and a valid driver’s license, and either possess or be in candidacy period for one of the listed professional certifications.
  • OR 30 months experience in affordable housing or the tax‑credit industry, a valid driver’s license, and the same certifications.
  • OR undergraduate core program in accounting, business administration, or public administration, 6 months experience in the affordable housing or tax‑credit industry, a valid driver’s license, and the certifications.
  • OR equivalent to the minimum class qualifications noted above. (Example: 24 months experience in accounting, business administration, or public administration.)

Selection

Positions will be filled in accordance with the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association contract.
