Regulatory Services Intern City of Covington, KY Economic Development Department

Location:

City Hall Part-time, 20-22 hours per week

Hours:

Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (Flexible)$12.00 - 15.00/hour

As a Regulatory Services Intern with the City of Covington, you'll get a behind-the-scenes look at the economic development process, learning about local zoning ordinances, historic preservation design guidelines, and other key elements that shape the future of our community. This internship offers a great introduction to the world of economic development, with the opportunity to provide administrative support to the Regulatory Services Team and gain valuable experience that will help shape your career in public service or the private sector. You'll not only understand how local government operates on a day-to-day basis but also learn how development decisions impact communities, businesses, and residents

Role Overview The Regulatory Services Intern reports to the Economic Development staff and provides valuable administrative support to the department’s regulatory services team. This internship will offer a hands-on learning experience in urban planning, zoning ordinances, historic preservation, and the various processes that contribute to economic development. As an intern, you’ll gain insight into the operational aspects of city government and economic development practices, while making a meaningful contribution to the revitalization and growth of Covington.

Key Responsibilities Administrative support for Economic Development staff, including assisting with permit applications and preparing for board meetings.

Conduct research and collect information to assist in various economic development projects.

Support the preparation of PowerPoint presentations for board meetings and other public presentations.

Receive, sort, and input permit applications using iWorq, an online application system.

Assist with maintaining and organizing department records and files.

Provide customer service in-person and over the phone, addressing inquiries from businesses, homeowners, and the public.

Attend bi-weekly ticket appeal meetings with the Infrastructure Specialist to gain exposure to city processes.

Assist with the posting of public notices and mailing of letters for public hearings and meetings.

Participate in department projects and initiatives, contributing ideas and gaining hands-on experience in the field of economic development.

Telephone skills and the confidence to call businesses and homeowners.

Ability to complete basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).Must have a professional understanding of the work environment and adhere to confidentiality standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge:

Basic understanding of zoning laws, urban planning, and historic preservation.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and/or graphics software is a plus.

Understanding of the regulatory process for economic development in a municipal context.

Skills:

Excellent customer service skills, both in-person and over the phone.

Strong communication and writing skills, including the ability to compose clear and accurate reports.

Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks lity to use GIS and/or other relevant software to support department work.

Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in administrative tasks.
