Assistant City Manager:
City of Covington, KY

Hours:
Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm Salary Range: $130,000 - $155,000 USD
Summary:
The assistant city manager supports the city manager by leading complex, confidential, and sensitive initiatives related to the priorities set by mayor and board of commissioners, internal policy development and citywide administrative functions. This position provides high-level analytical, operational, and strategic support to advance organizational goals, coordinate policy changes, and strengthen collaboration across departments. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the city manager in the implementation of board of commission priorities as well as special projects.
- Brief the city manager, elected officials, and senior management on administrative, policy, and operational issues.
- Collaborate with city departments to achieve organizational goals as a member of the executive management team.
- Perform complex, confidential, and sensitive projects as assigned by the city manager.
- Coordinate work related to policy changes within city government and oversee policy analysis.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring organization and prioritization.
- Develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with employees, citizens, community organizations, elected officials, boards, and commissions.
- Prepare and deliver effective oral presentations and written reports.
- Listen and communicate effectively with diverse groups and attend or conduct meetings as required.
- Oversee the application of government policies specific to local government operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Employees at all levels are expected to work effectively together to meet the needs of the community and the organization through work behaviors demonstrating the city's values.
- Employees are also expected to lead by example and demonstrate the highest level of ethics.
- This position provides supervision to the director of special projects and the community liaison.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- This position requires a high degree of confidentiality since responsibility includes management of records and information that may be sensitive.

- Bachelor's degree in public administration, organizational leadership, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of seven years of related work experience, with 3-5 years at a management level or equal combination of education and experience.
- Local government experience is strongly preferred.

- Knowledge of leadership principles to retain, motivate, and engage staff.
- Ability to advise city manager and elected officials on policies.
- Thorough knowledge of government policies specific to local government operations.
- Ability to coordinate across departments and divisions to achieve project or policy goals.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously through organization and prioritization.
- Logic and reasoning to analyze, understand, and evaluate complex situations, policies, and proposals.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with employees, citizens, community and private organizations, elected officials, boards, and commissions.
- Skill in effective oral presentations and written communication.
- Ability to listen and communicate effectively with diverse groups.
- General knowledge of office electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software.
- Demonstrated customer service skills when dealing with a diverse public.
- Deadline and task oriented for completion of projects on time.
- Demonstrated ability to manage employees.
- Ability to effectively express ideas and concepts clearly, diplomatically and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
