Diener for the Body Donation Program – Ohio State University, Columbus, OH
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Receiving, processing, embalming (as directed), and storing all human bodies acquired through the Body Donation Program.
- Securing samples for serology testing and coordinating with external vendors for testing.
- Serving as the point person for contracted vendors (e.g., livery service) and external programs to receive/return anatomical material.
- Preparing anatomical materials for educational and research needs, as directed.
- Assisting in the preparation and storage of prosections.
- Monitoring the use of anatomical materials over extended periods, maintaining donor inventory tracking.
- Preparing donors for cremation and receiving/processing cremated remains.
- Maintaining the highest standards of care to ensure the utmost respect of all human body donors.
- Maintaining cleanliness of the morgue, including coolers/freezers, and restocking supplies as needed.
- Tracking inventory of personal protective equipment, chemicals, cleaning supplies, and other materials used in the morgue.
- Working closely with the Anatomy Lab Technologist for lab turn‑overs, preparation, and maintenance, and for continuing medical education events.
- Assisting in the development of standard operating procedures.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Anatomical Services and Body Donation Program.
Associate's Degree in Laboratory Sciences, Biological Science or Mortuary Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Laboratory Sciences, Biological Sciences or Mortuary Science preferred.
- Embalming license, active and in good standing in the state of Ohio – highly desirable.
- Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and precautions related to the safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and biological materials.
Physical Requirements
- Successful completion of a background check required; final candidates may be asked to complete a pre‑employment physical, including a drug screen.
- Ability to lift 20 lb. routinely (equipment, supplies).
- Ability to move/rotate bodies of 250+ lb. using appropriate body mechanics and available equipment (gurneys, lifts, transfer boards).
- Ability to maneuver wheeled equipment up to ~300 lb.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods and work in awkward positions.
