The laboratory manager provides scientific, operational, and personnel leadership for the Serology/Virology section of the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Responsibilities include performing a wide variety of laboratory techniques to detect viruses, bacteria, and prions from animal specimens and to detect antibodies against viruses, bacteria, and fungi in animal serum samples. The position will primarily deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality diagnostic testing services, manage quality systems, order supplies and reagents, and maintain laboratory equipment.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in a related field of science.
- At least 2 years of professional experience in a relevant laboratory setting.
- Knowledge and experience with virology, immunology, and microbiological techniques.
- Familiarity with sterile techniques and cell culture maintenance.
- Proficiency in microtitration, dilutions, and micropipetting.
- Strong analytical skills to accurately observe, interpret, and communicate test results.
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and prioritize tasks.
- Experience troubleshooting test and equipment failures.
- Knowledge of AAVLD accreditation standards and applicable regulations.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, Acrobat, and general computer software packages.
- Leadership skills to supervise, train, and manage laboratory technicians.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing and SOP development.
- Perform diagnostic tests for viruses, bacteria, fungi, and prions, including ELISA, immunofluorescence, PCR, serum neutralization, latex agglutination, and agar gel immunodiffusion.
- Interpret results of diagnostic assays and communicate findings to submitting veterinarians.
- Provide consultation to clients on testing procedures and result interpretation.
- Maintain quality assurance and quality control procedures: develop and revise SOPs, ensure measurement traceability, monitor turnaround times, conduct root-cause analysis, calibrate and maintain equipment.
- Serve as immediate supervisor of all technicians, implement cross-training, conduct annual performance evaluations, and oversee daily workflow.
- Monitor and catalogue workflow for BSE, CWD, marine mammal, and routine veterinary tests; ensure timely request fulfilment.
- Order laboratory supplies, maintain reagent stocks, and coordinate with other section managers to improve operational efficiency.
- Assist section head and Quality Manager with accreditation audits and laboratory performance reporting.
Manual dexterity and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
