Patient Care Technician (PCT)

Mercy Health is a faith‑based and patient‑focused organization, dedicated to enhancing the health and well‑being of all people. The Patient Care Technician provides basic health care and support to patients under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional.

Job Summary
A PCT is responsible for sanitizing and cleaning patients’ rooms, monitoring vital signs, and assisting patients with basic needs such as feeding and grooming.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides basic patient care including care and comfort, vital sign measurement, personal care and hygiene, and assistance with mobility, including unit‑based specialty duties.
  • Acts as liaison between patient and nurse to report changes and concerns.
  • Provides high‑level customer service to all patients, family, visitors, and employees.
  • Provides accurate, precise, and timely documentation when applicable for patient care.
  • Participates in hand‑off/report of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs upon arrival and departure.
  • Performs delegated tasks once competency has been validated.
  • Mobilizes patients using therapeutic transfer techniques that foster independence and safety.
  • Encourages patients to complete tasks independently whenever possible.
  • Individualizes care based on patient’s interests and hobbies.

Education

None

Licensure/Certification

  • BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain from an approved source prior to direct patient care).
  • Successful completion of a nursing aide training program, or State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA), CNA, or equivalent; or 1 year of relevant clinical experience.

Experience

  • Recent experience in acute care, physician’s office, home health/hospice, or long‑term care facility (preferred).

Skills & Abilities

  • Problem‑solving skills with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Professional engagement with staff and patients.
  • Proactive in a rapidly changing environment.

Training

EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).

Clinical Nursing Student – West Hospital

Job Summary

The Clinical Nursing Student provides direct patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional, following federal, state, and local regulations and institutional policies. The role is designed to provide clinical experience through job shadowing and delegated care within the scope of the RN.

Essential Functions

  • Supports the RN in applying the nursing process and develops critical thinking skills through collaboration.
  • Seeks educational opportunities related to nursing practice.
  • Provides basic patient care: care and comfort, record vital signs, personal care and hygiene, mobility, including unit‑based specialty duties.
  • Acts as liaison between patient and nurse to report changes or concerns.
  • Provides high‑level customer service to all patients, family, visitors, and employees.
  • Provides accurate, precise, and timely documentation when applicable.
  • Participates in hand‑off/report of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs upon arrival and departure.
  • Performs delegated tasks once competency has been validated.
  • Participates in patient data collection and documentation (vital signs, intake/output, changes in patient condition).
  • Performs basic patient hygiene and activities of daily living: ambulation, feeding, hydration, nutrition, bowel and bladder elimination.
  • Utilizes applicable clinical technology.
  • Escalates concerns as appropriate through the chain of command.

Education

  • HS/GED (required).
  • Currently enrolled in a nursing program and completed one clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation (required).

Required Licensing & Certifications

  • BLS (preferred).

Experience

  • Recent experience in acute care and/or long‑term care facility (preferred).

Skills & Abilities

  • Clear communication with healthcare team.
  • Understanding and following directions of the healthcare team.
  • Knowledge of patient safety standards (falls, skin breakdown, suicide prevention, environment of care).
