Position: Associate Underwriter - Package Lines

Job Summary

Salary range: $43,950.00 – $78,759.00 annually + bonus + benefits.

Pay Type:

Hourly.

Preferred location is Columbus, Ohio; however, the role may be performed full‑time from any approved payroll state with hybrid or remote arrangements as applicable. The salary range covers both senior and non‑senior levels, and the position reports to the Manager of Commercial Lines Underwriting Services.

Job Objective

The Associate Underwriter evaluates and prices new business and renewal applications using basic underwriting techniques, ensuring acceptability in line with corporate guidelines. The role also records policy information, processes endorsements, audits, and other policy transactions, referring matters that exceed its authority to a higher‑level staff member. The primary goal is to support profitable new business writing and renewal retention while delivering excellent customer service.

Functions
  • Perform routine selection, evaluation, and pricing of all assigned risks for all lines of commercial insurance, including new business, revisions, renewals, and select reinsurance quoting.
  • Review basic new and renewal business requests to determine acceptability, applying Encova, state‑specific, and industry rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Set up and rate new business, gathering additional information required to develop a new business quote and/or proposal.
  • Issue and assemble policies, ensuring proper policy construction in accordance with industry rules and guidance.
  • Process endorsements, cancellations, declinations, and reissues of policies following applicable rules and procedures.
  • Field routine agency service requests, referring more complex issues to the team’s mentoring underwriter or the Regional Vice President.
  • Ensure accurate and timely servicing of accounts.
  • Maintain user knowledge of internal systems and available rating programs.
  • Complete transactions such as supplemental underwriting reports, MVRs, financials, surveys, agency transfers, statement of values, and driver list follow‑ups within assigned authority and refer risks that do not meet guidelines to a commercial underwriter.
  • Other Functions

    Knowledge,

    Skills and Abilities

    High school diploma required. Two years’ experience in a professional business or insurance environment preferred. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred and may substitute for experience. Preference may be shown to applicants with previous commercial lines underwriting experience.

    • Critical thinking: assess situations and select applicable alternatives from a range of options to make sustainable decisions.
    • Working knowledge of state‑specific underwriting laws, rules, and book of business application.
    • Working knowledge of underwriting principles, risk selection, and classification.
    • Working knowledge of operational policies and procedures.
    • Ability to multitask several assignments simultaneously while meeting established guidelines.
    • Results‑oriented with strong decision‑making, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
    • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
    • Ability to adjust priorities based on changing situations.
    • Effective communication skills.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve objectives.
    • Proficient in Excel.
