The Director of Client Accounting and Advisory Services (CAAS) is a high-level executive responsible for leading, scaling, and managing a CPA firm’s outsourced accounting and strategic fractional CFO/Controller advisory practice. This role transitions traditional compliance bookkeeping into a technology-driven, high-margin advisory service line.

Tax/Audit Partners or Chief Financial Officer (CFO) - Primary Objective
:
Drive practice area growth, optimize service delivery, and act as a trusted advisor to mid-market business clients.
- P&L Responsibility
:
Manage the financial health, billing strategies, KPIs, and operational budget of the CAAS service line. - Business Development
:
Identify, scope, and secure new client engagements while cross‑selling advisory services to existing tax/audit clients. - Tech Stack Optimization
:
Evaluate, implement, and champion cloud‑based ecosystem tools like Quick Books Online, Sage Intacct, , and customized reporting dashboards.
- Fractional CFO Services
:
Deliver executive‑level financial guidance, including strategic planning, cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and capital structure advice. - Performance Reporting
:
Design and present KPI metrics, performance cards, and automated financial narratives to client management and boards. - Operational Oversight
:
Supervise complex client onboarding, monthly/quarterly closing workflows, and coordinate year‑end data for the firm’s tax department.
- Staff Mentorship
:
Recruit, train, and develop entry‑level to manager‑level domestic and offshore accounting professionals. - Capacity Modeling
:
Design capacity and staffing matrix systems to accurately balance client tier demands with internal staff workloads.
- Bachelor’s Degree
:
Required in Accounting, Finance, or a related business domain. - Certifications
:
Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is highly preferred or mandatory depending on the firm's partner‑track alignment.
- Duration
: 10+ years of progressive public accounting, outsourced accounting services (CAS/CAAS), or corporate controller/CFO experience. - Client Management
:
Proven track record of managing middle‑market business relationships (typically clients ranging from $5M to $50M+ in annual revenue). - Leadership
:
Minimum of 3–5 years supervising hybrid or distributed team environments.
