Appalshop - WMMT Community Radio Capacity Y1
Appalshop is a nationally recognized nonprofit arts and media organization based in Whitesburg, Kentucky, dedicated to amplifying Appalachian voices through media, storytelling, education, and cultural preservation. Since 1969, Appalshop has served as a hub for community engagement and creative expression throughout Central Appalachia. WMMT, Appalshop’s community radio station, provides local music, public affairs programming, emergency information, and a platform for community voices often underrepresented in mainstream media.
The Ameri Corps VISTA member will help strengthen WMMT’s capacity to serve listeners, volunteers, artists, and community partners. The member will support the development of volunteer systems by improving materials for recruitment, orientation, scheduling, communication, and volunteer support resources. They will also develop community outreach efforts designed to increase participation in station programming through events, workshops, listening sessions, open houses, and other community engagement activities for staff to use.
In addition, the member will develop fundraising infrastructure by researching underwriting opportunities, creating outreach materials and contact lists, developing tracking systems, and supporting grant research and proposal preparation.
Whitesburg offers a welcoming small-town environment, a vibrant arts and music culture, and access to outdoor recreation throughout the Appalachian Mountains. Individuals interested in supporting community media and strengthening civic engagement in rural communities are encouraged to apply. For more information, contact Stewards Individual Placements.
