Laboratory Manager

Position Summary:

This position will serve as a lab manager in the Evolutionary Immunogenomics Lab (PI: Dr. Tauras Vilgalys) in the Department of Genetics. This is a heavily collaborative research environment that employs immunological and genomic approaches to understand the evolution of primates and other species. Our goal is to discover how natural populations resist infectious diseases and use those insights to improve human health.

Responsibilities will be to conduct research, develop new genomics and immunological assays, and oversee general management of the lab. The successful candidate will play an essential role in establishing the wet lab, generating new data, and helping train undergraduate and rotation students.

Responsibilities Scientific Research
  • Organize and assist in the implementation of research projects, including data collection and project management.
  • Read and develop a basic understanding of research project protocols.
  • Maintain accurate records on research projects.
  • Independently carry out and troubleshoot experiments, including developing new genomic and immunological assays.
  • Generate data for projects in the lab.
Lab Maintenance
  • Maintain lab safety compliance, inventory and purchase of lab supplies, and overall organization (e.g., wash glassware, prepare basic solutions, take away trash).
  • Serve as the point of contact for administrative and infrastructure needs.
Team Interaction
  • Professionally communicate with supervisor, graduate students, and research personnel concerning workflow, time limitations, and project status.
  • Opportunity to be involved in writing journal articles and presenting research at professional meetings and conferences.
Mentorship
  • Mentor junior researchers in experimental techniques.
  • Serve as a resource of practical experimental knowledge for new lab members.
  • Supervise laboratory technicians, student workers, and undergraduate researchers.
Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

Preferred qualifications:

Experience in a biological research lab, including molecular biology, cell culture, immunological assays, and genomic library preparation.
Ability to effectively communicate, maintain accurate documentation, and pay attention to detail.
Ability to work independently on research and lab management tasks.
