Assistant/Associate Research Scientist for Advancing Circular Bioeconomy Systems

Position Summary:

The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) at the University of Georgia seeks to recruit an Assistant or Associate Research Scientist to work on the Circular Bioeconomy Systems (CBS) initiative. This non‑tenured track position is 95% research and 5% service.

Appointment Details:
Researcher AC, FLSA Faculty Rank, Open Rank. Fiscal (12 months) contract, non‑tenure track.

Reporting:
The incumbent will report to the office of the CAES Associate Dean of Research and work closely with multidisciplinary teams across Colleges and Schools including Engineering, Forestry, Arts and Sciences, and Family and Consumer Sciences.

Responsibilities
  • Develop biophysical models and coordinate multidisciplinary efforts to build holistic, integrated biosystems, ecosystems, and socio‑economic system models for identifying:
  • Grand challenges in advancing sustainable circular bioeconomy systems;
  • Critical knowledge, techniques, and skills needed to address those challenges;
  • Priority actions for meeting short‑and long‑term CBS goals;
  • Methods to prototype and extend innovations for adoption by users.
  • Coordinate and draft external funding proposals to support the CBS initiative.
  • Interact with undergraduate, graduate students and stakeholders, and contribute to teaching and outreach.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in biochemical/chemical/agricultural/systems engineering, agricultural science, qualitative biology or equivalent, with a strong background and proven success in modeling biophysical systems.
  • Evidence of expertise in biophysical modeling, life‑cycle analysis, big data, digital twins, and latest modeling and AI techniques.
  • Post‑doctoral training and a strong publication record preferred.
  • Internship or hands‑on experience in biosystems industries and proficiency in preparing interdisciplinary grant proposals.
  • Knowledge of biomass production systems and processes that use biomass as feedstock for synthesizing materials, chemicals, and products.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills for collaborative, multidisciplinary teamwork.
