Job Description

Are You Ready? We are thrilled that you are interested in beginning your career with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

What You’ll Do:

  • Maintain control of the institution to provide safety and security for the facility, inmates, staff, and public by enforcing rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Supervise and direct inmate activity in assigned areas of the facility.
  • Ensure assigned area is clean, safe, and secure.
  • Monitor and operate security controls, equipment, and computers.
  • Operate automotive vehicles in perimeter security and transport inmates.
  • Conduct inmate counts, security rounds, and searches.
  • Complete required reports and serve on committees.
  • Prevent escapes or incidents that threaten security.
  • Use physical force, unarmed self‑defense, firearms, or other force when necessary to detain or secure inmates.

Salary details:
Newly hired Correction Officer starts at step 1 ($24.16) and moves to step 2 ($24.86) after 6 months of employment. Earn an additional $0.60 per hour for 2nd or 3rd shift.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.; valid driver's license required for positions assigned to transportation or requiring a commercial driver's license.
  • Successful completion of correction officer assessment within the past 24 months or current employment with Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and prior certification as correction officer.
  • Probationary period of 365 days.
