Overview

Vance-Granville Community College (VGCC) seeks a certified police officer with arrest authority to safeguard the college community. The officer will respond to students, faculty, staff, and visitors on the campus, enforce criminal and traffic laws, investigate incidents, patrol buildings and grounds, enforce parking and towing regulations, and serve as a first responder to medical crises. The position requires flexibility to work any shift, including on‑call duties, and must project a positive public image.

Teleworking is available, and the role is based at the VGCC Main Campus in Henderson, NC, with possible travel to other county campuses.

VGCC considers scope of responsibilities, experience, education, and internal equity in determining compensation.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate all law‑enforcement, security, and safety matters with the VGCC Chief of Campus Police.
  • Plan daily work schedule to complete assignments in a timely and professional manner.
  • Handle special events and plan activities accordingly.
  • Patrol assigned campus(s).
  • Respond to calls for service and perform arrests as necessary.
  • Respond to burglar and fire alarms.
  • Unlock and secure buildings on a regular schedule and as needed.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations and complete written reports.
  • Assist with support and implementation of college policies and procedures.
  • Work with school and community policing programs to reduce crime.
  • Take offenders into custody for on‑site offenses or court orders.
  • Respond to medical, elevator, and other emergencies; investigate hazards.
  • Inspect fire alarms, extinguishers, emergency lighting, and related equipment.
  • Investigate traffic accidents on campus property and adjacent roads.
  • Lead self‑initiated college and community policing projects.
  • Complete all reports related to incidents, traffic, safety, and security promptly.
  • Process evidence, confiscated, and found property.
  • Testify in court proceedings.
  • Assist other law‑enforcement agencies as requested.
  • Attend training sessions and perform relief duties on other campuses or special assignments.
  • Demonstrate college employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem‑solving, responsibility, and teamwork.
  • Execute all duties assigned by the supervisor or Chief of Campus Police.
Difficult Challenges

  • Resolve issues involving students, faculty, and the public.
  • Acquire knowledge of all VGCC campuses.
  • Function independently and as a team member.
  • Analyze issues and develop effective resolutions.
Contacts
  • Daily contact with other police officers for information exchange.
  • Daily contact with students, faculty, and staff for conflict resolution.
  • Several times a week contact with Police Supervisors and the Chief of Campus Police.
  • Monthly contact with officers from other agencies for fact‑finding and information exchange.
Education Required
  • High school graduate or G.E.D. certification as mandated by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
  • Completion of an accredited Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program and readiness to be certified by the Commission.
Education Preferred
  • Prior experience as a Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Prior experience in an educational institutional setting.
Experience Required
  • Prior experience as a Law Enforcement Officer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental directives.

  • Skill in using all law‑enforcement equipment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact well with students, faculty, staff, and the public.

  • Knowledge of community policing concepts.
  • Physical ability to operate departmental equipment, including computers.
