Piano Technician
Position Summary:
The Piano Technician supports the Lead Technician in the tuning, voicing, regulation, maintenance, and repair of the school’s inventory of 131 pianos and 3 harpsichords. Responsibilities include ongoing care of instruments in classrooms, practice rooms, faculty studios, performance halls, and preparation for concerts and recitals.
This position requires strong independent judgment, problem‑solving ability, and craftsmanship. A standard 40‑hour work week is expected, with occasional evening or weekend hours as needed for performance support.
Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications- At least three (3) years of professional institutional piano technician experience.
- Registered Piano Technician (RPT) certification from the Piano Technicians Guild preferred.
- Completion of manufacturer‑specific or recognized piano technology training.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of pianos.
- Strong diagnostic skills and the ability to perform corrective repairs independently.
- Proficiency in tuning, voicing, and regulating pianos to performance standards.
- Skillful and safe use of tools and equipment common to piano technology.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
- Ability to adapt to shifting priorities, time‑sensitive responsibilities, and changing schedules.
- Demonstrated high‑level tuning proficiency suitable for concert settings.
- Demonstrated experience of tuning, maintaining, and repairing high‑quality concert and institutional pianos.
- Completion of manufacturer‑specific or recognized piano technology training.
- Perform regular tuning, voicing, regulation, repairs, and rebuilding work as needed.
- Prepare instruments for concerts, recitals, and academic use.
- Assist in safe movement and relocation of pianos and harpsichords around campus facilities.
- Assist in moving pianos, harpsichords, and lifting piano actions.
- Normal physical demands required by piano technicians.
- Assist in moving pianos, harpsichords, and lifting piano actions.
- Applicants must hold valid U.S. work authorization for the full duration of the appointment.
