Position: Senior Backend Engineer (Python)

Senior Backend Engineer (Python)

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (Python) to join a technically demanding project involving data‑intensive processing, system integration, and semantic technologies. You will play a key role in taking ownership of an existing codebase, stabilising it, and evolving it in line with project requirements. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who is comfortable working with complex systems and understands data‑driven architectures.

You’ll Do
  • Analyse, understand, and take ownership of an existing Python‑based backend
    ;
  • Refactor and enhance backend components with a focus on maintainability and performance
    ;
  • Implement and maintain data processing pipelines and integration logic;
  • Collaborate closely with data/semantic engineers on RDF/SPARQL‑driven workflows;
  • Contribute to architecture reconstruction and technical documentation
    ;
  • Support deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting activities;
  • Ensure code quality through reviews, testing, and best practices.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of professional experience in backend development;
  • Strong proficiency in Python;
  • Experience with Apache Airflow, AWS, data‑intensive or integration‑heavy systems, APIs, batch processing, backend services, configuration‑driven systems (XML / JSON / YAML);
  • Solid understanding of software architecture and design patterns; debugging and working with legacy codebases;
  • Experience working in complex, multi‑stakeholder projects (EU or public‑sector projects is a plus).
Nice-to-Have
  • Familiarity with Semantic Web technologies (RDF, SPARQL, OWL);
  • Experience with data modelling or knowledge‑based systems;
  • Exposure to Dev Ops practices (CI/CD, containerisation);
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining technical documentation (e.g. Ascii Doc, Antora).
