Route Bus Driver
Salary: $20.20 - $32.70/hour
Minimum 4 hours per day
The job of Bus Driver is to transport students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions in a timely manner; ensuring the vehicle is in safe operating condition; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.
OverviewThe Bus Driver reports to the Director of Transportation and performs duties to ensure safe, efficient transportation of students and passengers.
Responsibilities- Advise students and other passengers of appropriate behavior to reinforce regulations and maintain passenger safety.
- Assess incidents, complaints, accidents and potential emergency situations to determine resolution or next steps.
- Assist students and passengers with safe loading and unloading, including handling emergencies and normal transport.
- Attend meetings and training to maintain skills and meet certification requirements for a school bus driver.
- Clean assigned vehicles (interior and exterior) to ensure safety, appearance, and sanitation.
- Conduct emergency evacuation drills to ensure procedure efficiency and compliance with requirements.
- Discharge students only at authorized stops in alignment with district policies and to avoid confusion.
- Drive school buses and vans to transport passengers on scheduled routes and field trips in a safe and timely manner.
- Fuel and maintain the assigned vehicle to keep it in safe operating condition.
- Inform school personnel and parents of events, route conditions, and related issues requiring action.
- Maintain confidentiality of information concerning students, staff or parents/guardians.
- Maintain availability for a varied schedule on snow days to support district operations.
- Obey all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses to complete routes and trips safely.
- Operate two-way radio and stay in communication with the Dispatcher and Department.
- Prepare documents and reports (e.g., field trip, incident, inspections, mileage logs, routing information) for written records and information sharing.
- Report observations and incidents to appropriate personnel.
- Respond to inquiries from students, parents, and school personnel with information and direction.
- Supervise students and passengers during transit, following district policies and disciplinary procedures as needed.
- Utilize proper OSHA procedures when handling body fluids to protect health.
- Assist other personnel as required to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
- Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities — Adhere to safety practices; operate school buses and related equipment; maintain accurate records.
- Knowledge — Basic math; understand procedures; knowledge of relevant traffic laws; procedures for student discipline; safety practices.
- Abilities — Schedule activities; analyze data; operate equipment; work with diverse individuals; meet deadlines; maintain confidentiality; problem solving with data and equipment.
- Responsibility — Work under limited supervision; lead or coordinate others; operate within a defined budget; opportunities to impact district services.
- Work Environment — Physical demands include lifting, climbing, stooping; typical distribution of time among sitting, walking and standing; exposure to temperature extremes and potential risk.
- High school diploma or equivalent; job-related experience required.
- Certificates and Licenses: CDL Type B with PS Endorsement;
Federal DOT Physical; pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screening; CPR/First Aid as assigned; evidence of insurability. - Continuing Education / Training and Clearances: annual trainings (Bloodborne Pathogens, Diabetes, Homelessness, etc.); criminal background clearance; maintain insurability.
