The Substation Civil Engineer III – Foundation Focus is responsible for advanced engineering analysis and design of substation foundations, including equipment foundations, structure foundations, deep and shallow systems, and ground-supported structural elements. The engineer independently interprets geotechnical data, performs complex structural and foundation calculations, and develops complete foundation design packages. This role interfaces directly with clients, internal teams, and vendors and provides mentorship to junior engineers while supporting construction activities with moderate guidance.
WhatYou’ll Do
- Prepare scopes of work, estimates, and technical documentation for foundation engineering on substation projects
- Identify appropriate foundation types based on geotechnical conditions, environmental factors, and loading requirements
- Perform advanced foundation engineering calculations including bearing capacity, settlement, uplift resistance, lateral resistance, structural load combinations, and equipment loading
- Conduct structural analysis for substation equipment foundations and support structures
- Develop foundation plans, sections, reinforcement details, and calculation packages for IFR/IFA/IFC deliverables
- Interpret and analyze soil boring logs, geotechnical reports, and site investigation data with minimal oversight
- Interface with internal engineering teams, project managers, clients, and vendors to communicate technical solutions and coordinate design decisions
- Apply governing codes and standards independently (ASCE, ACI, AISC, AASHTO)
- Perform peer checks on lower-level engineering work and carry out formal QC reviews with minimal correction needed
- Mentor junior engineers on foundation engineering principles, analysis techniques, and software tools
- Provide moderate field support including review of foundation excavations, reinforcement placement, and troubleshooting construction issues
- Support construction teams by answering technical questions and providing limited field analysis under senior guidance
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
- 3+ years of foundation or structural engineering experience; 2 additional years accepted in lieu of FE certification
- Proficiency in foundation and structural analysis software (L‑Pile, RISA, Autodesk Inventor, etc.)
- Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and interpretation of soil boring data
- Experience designing foundations for utility, industrial, or infrastructure projects
- Knowledge of industry standards including ASCE, ACI, AISC, and AASHTO
- Ability to develop detailed foundation plans and calculation packages with minimal oversight
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or Civil 3D;
Bentley Micro Station or Bentley Substation experience is a plus - Strong skills in Microsoft Office and PDF markup tools (e.g., Bluebeam)
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT / FE Certification) preferred
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT / FE Certification) required, or additional 2 years of civil design experience in lieu of FE certification
