Field Technician - Subsurface Utilities (SUE)

T. Baker Smith seeks an entry‑level Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Field Technician to work on a field team using the latest utility designating, locating, and vacuum excavation equipment and technology.

• Communicate with the Project Manager, project team, and client field representative.
• Select and apply appropriate geophysical prospecting equipment to accurately designate underground utility layouts.
• Operate and drive a vacuum excavation truck and perform test holes to expose utilities.
• Complete documentation—including record keeping and simple mathematics—legibly and accurately.
• Select and implement proper maintenance of traffic signage.
• Communicate and coordinate with utility company representatives.
• Represent and communicate on behalf of T. Baker Smith and the crew when encountering third parties in the field.
• Complete daily job safety analysis forms.
• Inspect equipment to ensure proper working conditions prior to use.
• Identify and report any equipment failure on the work order maintenance form.
• Perform work in a safe and efficient manner.
• Report incidents to the appropriate personnel and complete incident reports as required.
• Monitor work conditions and responsibly use stop‑work authority.

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is frequently required to stand; walk long distances while carrying equipment, sometimes through rugged terrain, mud, or swamp; drive and/or ride in a boat; sit; balance, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds; use hands to operate, handle, maneuver, and/or manipulate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; use manual dexterity to operate equipment;

talk and hear; and possess the specified vision abilities.

• Ability to perform physical movements and tractions commensurate with operating heavy tools and equipment.
• Possess basic computer skills and the ability to learn and understand new software.
• Ability to operate surveying instruments, boats, airboats, GPS, all‑terrain vehicles, and other equipment necessary to obtain survey data.
• Attention to detail, accuracy, and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

The job is generally outdoors and exposed to the weather. The associate will ride in a motorized vehicle and is frequently exposed to noise, dust, smells, and other environmental factors present in such situations.
