Position Summary
A Manual Machinist is a highly skilled tradesperson responsible for setting up and operating traditional, non-computerized machine tools—such as engine lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders—to fabricate, modify, or repair precision metallic and non-metallic parts. Manual machinists rely on software, deep mechanical aptitude, blueprints, and hands-on calculations to shape raw materials into exact specifications.
Core Responsibilities
- Blueprint & Drawing Interpretation:
Read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and blueprints to determine the correct methods, materials, and sequence of operations. - Machine Setup & Operation:
Align, secure, and adjust work pieces and cutting tools on manual equipment. Calculate and set correct feeds, speeds, and depth of cuts. Fabrication:
Manually turn, mill, drill, shape, and grind materials to exact dimensional tolerances (often within ± 0.001"). - Quality Assurance & Inspection:
Routinely use precision measuring instruments —including micrometers, calipers, and gauges—to inspect parts during and after the machining process. - Machine Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance on machinery, such as cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn cutting tools to ensure optimal performance.
Key Requirements
- Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Completion of a vocational technical training program, an associate degree, or a formal industry apprenticeship is highly preferred. - Technical
Skills:
Strong mechanical aptitude, deep knowledge of metalworking techniques, and proficiency in shop mathematics (geometry and trigonometry). - Precision & Detail:
Exceptional hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and an unwavering focus on accuracy. - Physical Demands:
Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, bend, reach, and safely lift or maneuver heavy materials (up to 50 lbs).
Qualifications & Workplace Requirements
- Professional Standing: Must remain in good standing across all internal metrics, including safety protocols, quality guidelines, attendance standards, and company disciplinary policies.
- Team Alignment: Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced group setting, demonstrating strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Policy Compliance: Strict adherence to all established company policies, procedures, and plant safety regulations.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Physical Agility: Continuous standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and twisting on a concrete manufacturing floor throughout the shift.
- Lifting Capacity: Ability to safely lift, push, pull, and carry a minimum of 50 pounds independently.
