Position Summary

Engineer III is responsible for leading all short, medium, and long-range reclamation planning and scheduling activities on the project site. Ensure that plans align with project objectives with respect to cost management and delivery timelines. The position interfaces closely with internal operations teams, clients and third-party contractors to ensure reclamation activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contractual and regulatory obligations.

The Engineer III serves as a technical leader, mentor, and supervisor for engineering and support staff assigned to reclamation operations.

This position has direct supervisory responsibility for engineers, technicians, and assigned clerical staff. Responsible for work prioritization, performance management, coaching, and professional development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as the Lead Engineer responsible for short-, medium-, and long-range reclamation planning and scheduling, including activities such as re-grading, soil placement, drainage control, and revegetation.
  • Develop and maintain reclamation schedules and cost forecasts that align with project objectives, contract requirements, and regulatory obligations.
  • Lead engineering staff performing surveying, mapping and surface modeling to support reclamation planning and execution.
  • Evaluate reclaimed areas for geotechnical risks including subsidence, slope stability, erosion or similar and ensure appropriate mitigation measures are being implemented.
  • Prepare and review weekly and monthly schedule updates, production metrics and cost forecasts.
  • Observing and tracking field conditions and practices for continuous improvement.
  • Review all project progress reports, including production metrics and schedule updates prior to submission to the client.
  • Evaluate and administer contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.
  • Manage, coach, and develop assigned engineering staff, including performance management, work prioritization, and professional development.
  • Promote and enforce adhere to all company safety policies, procedures and regulatory requirements while working in office and field environments.
Typical Physical Demands
  • Requires prolonged sitting, with occasional bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Frequent data entry for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and eye–hand coordination sufficient to operate office equipment (e.g., keyboard, phone, copier, calculator, other office and field equipment)
  • Requires adequate hearing and vision to prepare, review, and communicate reports effectively.
  • Mobility sufficient to travel as needed.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when working in mine, outdoor, manufacturing, or plant environments, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and, as needed, steel‑toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and other required equipment
Typical Working Conditions

Work involves both office and active mine site environments, requiring compliance with all safety and environmental standards and occasional evening or weekend work. Occasional offsite travel may be necessary depending on assigned duties.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 7 years of related work experience, mining or heavy earthmoving in the civil industry.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Licenses, Registration, and Certifications
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license through duration of employment.
  • Must meet all insurability requirements as specified by Westmoreland’s policies or Driver’s insurance provider.
  • Ability to utilize AutoCAD, Carlson Mining, Minescape and/or similar mine planning software packages.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Clear and professional communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and team‑direction capabilities.
  • Strong planning, analytical, and organizational skills.
