Job Summary
The Colorado State Patrol Police Communication Technician is a non‑sworn telecommunication specialist who provides dispatch services to law enforcement officers from multiple agencies. As a fully operational level position, the technician receives and disseminates emergency calls for service to federal, state, and local public safety agencies, monitors officer activity, and supports critical decision making to safeguard public safety.
Work Environment- 100% in‑person position with 24/7 operations including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Shift mix varies by unit demand; includes shift differentials: 20% for weekend shifts, 7.5% for swing shifts, and 14% for grave shifts.
- Approximately 20‑week training program (first 4 weeks Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am–4:00 pm).
- Receive and triage incoming telephone or alarm system calls for emergency and non‑emergency police, fire, ambulance, and other public safety services.
- Determine response requirements and prioritize situations, dispatching units according to established procedures.
- Operate the Incident Command/Integrated Command Systems (ICS) to record call details, dispatches, and messages.
- Relay information and messages to emergency sites, law enforcement agencies, and other required parties.
- Use Computer Aided Dispatch System to contact field units and determine available resources for dispatch.
- Process all requests for emergency services such as 911 calls, suicide, homicide, assaults, domestic disputes, traffic accidents, and other incidents.
- Operate camera systems, radio consoles, and computer terminals to receive, record, and transmit communications.
- Interview callers, analyze situations, and determine appropriate level of response.
Police Communication Intern (Entry‑Level)
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Willing and able to work any shift as part of a permanent schedule after training (including nights, weekends, and holidays).
- Fluently speak English with a clear speaking voice.
Police Communication Technician
- One year of full‑time 911 emergency dispatch experience or completion of an authorized Communication Training Officer Program (substitutes for required experience).
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Willing and able to work any shift as part of a permanent schedule after training.
- Fluently speak English with a clear speaking voice.
- High school diploma or G.E.D. and ability to type approximately 35 words per minute.
- Bilingual skills (e.g., Spanish or Russian) including reading, writing, and speaking.
- Intern: $4,353 /month ($52,236 /year) – ranges to $4,955 /month ($59,460 /year) after training.
- Technician: $4,955 – $6,937 /month ($59,460 – $83,244 /year).
