Vehicle Fitter (Mechanic/HGV) - Public Sector

Location:

Craigavon

Rate: £16.89 per hour

Contract:

Fixed Term Contract – 6 months (potential extension)

Hours:

37 hours per week, 4 day week, Monday to Sunday 6:30am‑4:15pm. Rotating rest day. Flexibility evenings, weekends, public holidays. Out of hour emergency response when required.

Role Overview

This role is for an experienced Vehicle Fitter (Mechanic/HGV) based in Craigavon. The successful candidate will perform planned and reactive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics and repairs on a fleet of vehicles and machinery, support compliance and record keeping, and may supervise temporary staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, repair and maintain fleet vehicles, plant and machinery.
  • Carry out preventative and scheduled maintenance programmes.
  • Attend roadside breakdowns and emergency call-outs.
  • Complete vehicle safety inspections, pre-MOT/PSV checks.
  • Use computer‑based diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and electronic systems.
  • Maintain accurate workshop and fleet records.
  • Ensure health and safety regulations compliance.
  • Support supervision and training of agency and temporary staff.
Essential Criteria
  • City & Guilds/NVQ Level 2 in Motor Vehicle or HGV Studies (or equivalent).
  • Minimum three years post‑apprenticeship experience in motor vehicle maintenance.
  • Knowledge of electrical diagnostic systems.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety procedures.
  • Full Category B UK driving licence.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable Criteria
  • City & Guilds/NVQ Level 3 in Motor Vehicle or HGV Studies.
  • Experience maintaining hydraulic equipment and electrical systems.
  • HGV maintenance experience.
  • Category C & E driving licence.
Working Pattern
  • 37 hours per week.
  • Working Monday to Sunday.
  • Hours 6:30am – 4:15pm.
  • Rotating rest day pattern.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and public holidays.
  • Participation in emergency out‑of‑hours response may be required.
