Position: Director of the Academic Learning Center

Job Summary

The Director of the Academic Learning Centers (ALCs) is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the UCNJ’s peer tutoring program, ensuring the effective delivery of tutorial services to meet student needs through collaboration with faculty and staff.

Responsibilities
  • Provides vision, strategic leadership, and development of ALCs goals to align with the College’s Institutional Priorities.
  • Ensures a student-centered and service-oriented environment on each campus ALC.
  • Collaborates with deans and department managers to create innovative programs that support degree completion, retention, and graduation.
  • Regularly evaluates processes, procedures, and services for continuous improvement of academic support and departmental efficiency.
  • Integrates the use of AI into tutoring and departmental processes.
  • Recruits, hires, and supervises tutorial staff, including professional, paraprofessional, and peer staff members.
  • Supervises Head Tutors responsible for the day-to-day operation of an assigned learning center.
  • Oversees the delivery of online tutoring services through synchronous ALC staff sessions and the  platform.
  • Conducts annual or bi-annual evaluations of full-time and part-time tutorial staff.
  • Establishes tutoring schedules in alignment with the College’s course schedule to ensure appropriate availability of student support each term.
  • Collaborates with Creative Services in the development of marketing materials for ALC services.
  • Develops and conducts training materials to meet the overall needs of staff members, as well as training for individuals, specific subject matter, or identified cohorts.
  • Oversees the tutoring parameters of any grant in which the ALC is a participating department.
  • Oversees the preparation of payroll information.
  • Develops and implements assessment tools for ALC services through outcomes-based approaches.
  • Oversees the collection and analysis of appropriate data.
  • Prepares summary reports on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis or as requested.
  • Maintains current working knowledge of developments in the field of tutoring services.
  • Participates in professional development through professional organizations, webinars, and conferences.
  • Represents the department at College events to promote tutorial services.
  • Attends College meetings and other committees as appropriate or as requested.
  • Acts as a liaison between the tutoring program and the faculty.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive responsibility in a tutoring center that includes administrative or program management experience.
Competencies and Skills Required
  • Strong personnel supervisory skills.
  • Knowledge of tutoring best practices.
  • Literacy in program assessment and data analysis.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Cross-cultural competency.
  • Budget development and fiscal management skills.
  • Organizational skills that effectively utilize technological tools.
  • Familiarity with the College Reading & Learning Association Certification.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Position duties are performed in a typical interior work environment.
  • Occasional lifting or moving of up to 25 pounds.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Some travel required.
Salary

$80,000 – $85,000

  • Full‑time position.
