Union County College is a public comprehensive community college providing quality, affordable, accessible educational programs that serve the greater Union County region. It is the oldest of New Jersey’s 19 Associate Degree Colleges, serving both career‑minded and transfer‑oriented students since 1933. The College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and many programs lead to the Associate in Arts, Science and Applied Science degrees.

Responsibilities
  • Install equipment and maintain campus buildings, plumbing facilities, and fixtures using a variety of testing devices and tools.
  • Assist with routine maintenance utilizing building trades including electrical, roofing, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, glazing, locksmithing, masonry, painting and landscaping of all college owned or operated facilities.
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment and report questionable conditions to the Facilities Site Lead.
  • Perform general construction tasks such as new work, remodeling, repairing existing building or subdivision, modifying walls, doors, modular partitions, ceiling and other building components.
  • Operate heavy equipment and perform repairs for weed and grass control, snow removal, landscaping, grading and trenching.
  • Operate computerized HVAC management system, troubleshoot, diagnose and solve problems, and communicate with equipment manufacturers as required.
  • Operate HVAC systems, boilers and related building system equipment manually if the computerized system fails.
  • Operate various hand tools and equipment used in performing minor repairs.
  • Inspect lights, doors, entrances, restrooms, classrooms, offices and corridors and report any problems to the Facilities Site Lead or Facilities Office.
  • Operate vehicles for the transportation of employees and materials.
  • Assemble equipment and furniture using simple hand tools.
  • Perform general clean‑up work in and outdoors using hand and power tools.
  • Operate and maintain all grounds, keeping the site clean, free of debris and maintaining safe conditions at all times in the workshop and campus‑wide.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED certification required.
  • Trade school or vocational educational background preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in building trades.
  • General experience in the construction trades of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC or automotive repair preferred.
  • Competency in troubleshooting and maintaining building equipment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Typical interior/residential work environment with frequent work inside and outside.
  • Work includes exposure to dirty and greasy conditions, extreme temperatures, dirt, disagreeable odors, skin irritations from cleaning chemicals and solutions.
  • Exposures to cuts, scrapes, bruises and infections are possible.
  • Physical effort required; frequently handles, lifts, carries and sets up tools, parts and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires use of ladders, scaffolds and work at heights and in hard‑to‑reach places.
  • Standing, stooping, and bending are common.
  • Some travel may be required.
