Job Description

I. Position: Certified Teacher

II. Function: The Classroom Teacher creates a nurturing learning environment to facilitate the personal, social and intellectual development of students. In order to respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, the Classroom Teacher works closely with other staff and District administration.

Current RI Teaching Certificate in relevant content area

V. Summary of Essential Functions
  • Facilitate the personal, social and intellectual development of students.
  • Establish a nurturing learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students.
  • Implement useful assessment measures.
  • Select and use effective instructional methods and learning materials.
  • Establish a cooperative relationship with all assigned students.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with parents/guardians.
  • Engage in professional growth activities through an ongoing program of job‑related knowledge and skill development.
  • Work collaboratively to achieve the overall philosophy and mission of the District.
  • Adhere to a strict policy of complete confidentiality for all student information.
VI. Standards of Practice and Expectations of Certified Teaching Personnel Expectation of Contribution to Overall Operation of the Building
  • Assume responsibility for correcting pupil misbehavior outside the classroom, e.g., in the lavatory.
  • Coordinate and participate in school‑wide projects such as RIF, assembly programs, school clean‑up programs.
  • For elementary teachers, meet and escort students at building entrances in the morning and following recess and lunch, and at other times when the entire class moves within the building.
  • Cover classes (according to contractual guidelines).
  • Remain at doors during student passing time to supervise in those buildings that operate in a departmentalized organizational structure.
  • Distribute school‑related communications.
  • Ensure the classroom is left in proper and secure order at the end of the school day.
  • Clean up after staff in the faculty room.
  • Perform recess and lunch duties.
  • Keep abreast of new curriculum trends and be involved in professional organizations.
  • Maintain a positive, enthusiastic classroom atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Attempt to meet individual needs of all children with an empathetic/supportive attitude toward special education students.
  • Set goals and objectives for the courses they teach.
  • Provide basic counseling assistance to students in need of direction and support with personal and educational problems.
Expected Routine Classroom Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain a substitute folder containing updated lesson plans, seating plan, schedule, attendance routines, fire drill procedures, reading and math group plans, health information, dependable student list, and other information useful for substitutes.
  • Be alert to students’ health needs such as eyestrain, hearing loss, child abuse or neglect, improper seating.
  • Implement proper discipline, including routine discipline and problem‑solving techniques.
  • Never leave the classroom with students unless supervision has been arranged.
  • Correct all worksheets and work assigned to students.
  • Ensure general welfare of students.
  • Participate in the grade reporting system, maintain formative and summative assessments to verify progress.
Expected Parent and Community (External) Relations
  • Improve public relations in the community with parent groups and community movements; attend school‑related functions, in‑service meetings, curriculum study meetings, and district‑wide curriculum committees.
  • Respond within a reasonable time frame to parental requests.
Maintenance of Expected Internal Relationships
  • Keep lines of communication open among teachers, parents, students, and principal.
  • Dress neatly to model good grooming.
  • Work with specialists to provide mainstream programs for students and collaborate with PPS and agency personnel.
