Description
This volunteer role supports parent–child visits within the Department of Corrections (DOC). These visits are designed to facilitate healthy, structured interactions between incarcerated parents and their children and to strengthen family bonds.
ScheduleVisits are held weekly on Saturday mornings.
Volunteer shifts are available from 8:00 a.m.–10:00 a.m. or 8:45 a.m.–11:00 a.m.
Key Responsibilities- Visit facilitation
:
Greet families and support Saturday morning sessions to help maintain a welcoming, child-centered environment. - Activity support
:
Assist children with age-appropriate activities using provided materials. - Special events: Provide support for reunification programs, holiday visits, and other family-engagement events (e.g., parenting days).
Volunteer Requirements
- Background checks
:
Must successfully complete required criminal background screening. - Mandatory orientation
:
Complete a two-day DOC facility orientation, security training, and specialized trauma-informed care workshops.
- Professional neutrality
:
Maintain professionalism and objectivity in an emotionally sensitive correctional setting. - Cultural Competency
:
Work effectively with diverse populations; bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is preferred. - Active Listening
:
Serve as a supportive, nonjudgmental presence while providing appropriate encouragement to families.
