Position Announcement:
Essential Skills Teacher beginning 26/27 School Year
Southmont Schools is seeking dedicated and compassionate Essential Skills Teacher to support students with significant developmental, academic, social, and functional needs. These positions play a critical role in helping students develop independence, communication, daily living skills, and access to appropriately adapted academic instruction.
Position Summary
The Essential Skills Teacher provides specialized instruction aligned to each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and collaborates with families, support staff, and related service providers to create safe, supportive, and engaging learning environments. The teacher implements evidence-based practices and individualized support to promote functional and academic growth.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide individualized and small-group instruction based on student IEP goals.
* Develop and implement instructional plans that incorporate functional academics, communication, social skills, and life skills.
* Utilize evidence-based practices such as structured teaching, visual supports, prompting hierarchies, and behavioral strategies.
* Collaborate with paraprofessionals, therapists, and other staff to ensure coordinated services.
* Collect and analyze student data to monitor progress and adjust instruction.
* Maintain accurate records and participate in IEP development, case conferences, and parent communication.
* Foster a positive, structured classroom environment that supports student safety, engagement, and independence.
* Support inclusion opportunities and collaborate with general education teachers when appropriate.
Qualifications
* Valid Indiana teaching license in Special Education (e.g., Exceptional Needs-Mild, Moderate, or Severe Intervention) or ability to obtain
* Experience working with students with significant disabilities preferred.
* Strong skills in communication, organization, collaboration, and problem-solving.
* Commitment to student-centered instruction and individualized support.
* Experience with assistive technology and augmentative/alternative communication (AAC).
* Knowledge of functional behavior assessment (FBA), PBIS strategies, and sensory supports.
* Ability to supervise and coach paraprofessionals effectively.
