Peer Support Specialist Hourly Rate: $17.65 - $19.46
Job SummaryThe Del Norte County is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Peer Support Specialist. This position is classified as Part‑Time/Temporary. Employees in this classification receive general to limited supervision within a framework of policies and procedures. Under close supervision the employee performs a variety of sub‑professional work in support of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Behavioral Health Branch (BHB), programs and related functions.
Employees in this class receive in‑service training, and are given detailed instructions in a wide variety of non‑technical work. Essential job duties may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position‑specific tasks.
Duties
- Provides advocacy, support, and guidance to clients of DHHS, BHB.
- Assists in helping clients and their families use and learn about the resources of society, particularly medical, employment, and social services. Acts as liaison between clients and professional staff, individuals, and groups in the community.
- Translates and/or aids in other ways the effective communication between clients and other agency staff.
- Transports or accompanies clients on appointments for service or interviews.
- Participates in required training programs.
- Assists in conducting training activities and providing educational materials for community groups, DHHS, BHB clients and family members.
- Assists in the facilitation of group activities and/or facilitates peer support groups.
- Assists professional and paraprofessional staff in obtaining and documenting client information on various forms.
- Maintains electronic records of work performed, and performs other related work as required.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

Experience:
Must have a minimum of one (1) year of recovery from lived experience in Behavioral Health, Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and/or co‑occurring mental health disorders, or a caretaker or family member of someone who has had behavioral health conditions.
Knowledge of:
- Community resources including social, educational and employment services.
Ability to:
- Understand the needs, problems, attitudes, and behavior of (DHHS, BHB) clients served by the agency.
- Understand and accept differences in human behavior resulting from cultural, economic, or other diverse backgrounds.
- Read, interpret, and follow departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations.
- Operate standard office equipment.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency co‑workers, outside agencies, and/or the general public.
- Meet the public tactfully and courteously and furnish routine information.
- Actively model the highest ethical standards; is honest and accountable; maintains confidentiality and appropriate boundaries at all times.
- Maintain‑up‑to‑date records, exceptional written and verbal communication.
- Work in a team; excellent time management skills; and organizational abilities.
- Establish rapport easily with others; listens attentively; appropriately expresses empathy. Must comply with all agency and contract requirements related to trainings.
- Operate a keyboard on a computer, copier, facsimile machine and like equipment.
