Position OverviewThe Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a driven Communications Technician I. The person selected will function as a journey-level Electronics Technician in the maintenance and operation of two-way radio equipment and Cable TV systems throughout the state. Travel is required.
Essential Functions- Travels to adult/youth facilities to analyze electrical circuit problems in the Department's radio and close-circuit television systems.
- Maintains and controls inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Services a variety of other electronic equipment.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to four (4) years of high school plus two (2) years of technical school with coursework in electricity, electronics, and communications systems.
- Requires valid FCC licensure or certification by an approved organization (Active Radiotelephone, First or Second-Class Operator's Licenses; while no longer issued by the FCC, remain applicable; Certification by NABER or APCO or an equivalent organization is substitutable).
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience programming radio frequencies on public safety and/or similar like communication equipment.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with various types of radio frequency programming templates.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience troubleshooting video surveillance equipment including verifying wired/wireless connections, image quality, and maintaining cables/equipment and power supplies.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience presenting technical concepts to internal/external team members with varying technical knowledge.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience installing and maintaining video surveillance equipment at a public safety agency.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience troubleshooting in-house cable TV.
- Requires a driver’s license and the ability to travel.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. Unauthorized use of drugs is prohibited.
- Utilizes digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes to support digital enhancements within the department.
