Dental Assistant

This position works within the Dental Program at the Okaloosa County Health Department (OCHD) in a clinical setting. It provides direct care and assists the public health dentist in the care of patients under the supervision of the Dentist(s) and Dental Program Manager. The assistant delivers culturally competent oral health services, promotes preventive behaviors, and works to reduce oral health disparities among children.

• Assist the dentist during examinations and treatments, including preparing patients, setting up instrument trays, and preparing materials for procedures.
• Perform polishing of teeth, apply sealants, fluoride treatments, and assist in managing medical and dental emergencies.
• Place and remove rubber dams and matrices; take and record patient health histories and vital signs; provide postoperative instruction as prescribed.
• Sterilize and disinfect instruments and clean dental operatories; perform routine maintenance on instruments and equipment.
• Manage inventory using the electronic inventory system, submit purchase orders, and produce inventory reports.
• Schedule appointments and enter demographic, financial, and insurance information into the HMS and Eaglesoft databases; input referral information into third‑party portals.
• Record treatment and billing information in the electronic oral health record; maintain unmet need log and prepare charts, graphs, and reports.
• Provide oral hygiene and plaque control education through discussion with patients and parents and distribute educational material.
• Place and expose dental radiographs (x‑rays).
• Participate in scheduled clinic team meetings, performance management, quality improvement, record audits, general staff meetings, and in‑service training.
• Perform any other duties assigned in support of the agency’s vision and mission.

• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to place and expose radiographs.
• Ability to work 8–9.5 hours in a clinic setting providing direct patient care.
• Skilled in operating a variety of dental, computer, and office equipment.
• Ability to collect data and perform data entry.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Skill in effective communication in written, oral, or electronic formats.

• Must maintain a valid U.S. Driver’s License.
• Successful completion of Expanded Duty course or similar program in accordance with 64B5‑16.002, Florida Administrative Code.
• Certification as a Dental Radiographer pursuant to rule 64B5‑9.011, Florida Administrative Code.
