GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Communicates, plans, coordinates, and implements programs and projects to purposefully inspire and educate the community to take actions necessary to improve the natural beauty and sustainability of Okaloosa County, including litter control, improved recycling, and other environmentally conscious activities.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
* Performs duties as assigned related to Recycling Program education and outreach, environmental advocacy partnerships, and acts as the Director of Keep Okaloosa Beautiful.
* Exercises public outreach with a focus on recycling education in collaboration with Waste Resource Division of Public Works, County Public Information Officer, and recycling service providers with an overall goal to maintain low recycling contamination rate standards.
* Engages and collaborates on environmental outreach and public information initiatives in collaboration with the Waste Resource Division of Public Works and the County Public Information Officer.
* Develops and maintains relationships with academic, non-government, and non-profit organizations that relate to environmental resources, goals, and initiatives.
* Establishes and nurtures productive working relationships with regulatory and advocacy entities such as the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, FDOT, Keep America Beautiful, and Keep Florida Beautiful.
* Manages and maintains membership and regular meetings for the Keep Okaloosa Beautiful Advisory Committee (KOBAC).
* Responds to inquiries and concerns from the public, media, professional organizations, civic groups and outside county departments relevant to recycling, coastal and inland environmental concerns.
* Schedules and coordinates special projects and events with Recycling Services of Okaloosa County, Leave No Trace initiatives, Keep Okaloosa Beautiful, Okaloosa County Natural Resources, and various beautification partnerships.
* Gathers and edits engaging photo and video content in the field and at events for social media and traditional media content.
* Engages and responds to the public through Social Media platforms including Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), You Tube, and Linked In. Interfaces with other department Facebook pages to share information, keep citizens engaged and generate impactful environmental educational outreach.
* Assists Natural Resources Division of the Tourism Development Department (TDD) with projects related to coastal resiliency, environmental education, marine debris removal, ecosystem restoration, and other related projects.
* Informs, communicates, and builds consensus with the public on matters related to natural resources management.
* Creates and organizes volunteer opportunities related to natural resources management.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and
Experience:
Bachelor's degree in environmental or natural sciences, or closely related field; supplemented by two (2) years of professional experience in public relations, strategic communications, , program evaluation, project management, and/or research/analysis with an emphasis on environmental concerns; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position. Experience in public speaking and social media for business is required.
Must have excellent writing and organization skills. Adobe and Microsoft Office experience is required.
Experience with professional photo and video editing software is preferred.
Experience with recycling program communications and/or environmental program development is preferred
Licenses and/or
Certifications:
Requires a valid driver's license.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements:
Requires the ability to effectively operate modern office equipment, to include computers, copy/fax machines, and any related peripherals. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 25 pounds frequently, to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Requires the ability to traverse irregular or uneven terrain as needed and be able to tolerate stationary positions often.
Must be able to work for sustained periods of exposure to outside atmospheric conditions. Physical demands are essentially those of sedentary work.
Language Ability:
Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record and exchange information; requires the ability to explain procedures and to give, receive and follow oral and written instructions.
