LOCATION, CONTACT AND SALARY INFORMATION :

Location Information: Okaloosa Regional Juvenile Detention Center; 4448 Straightline Road;
Crestview, FL 32539

Minimum Biweekly Rate of Pay: $1,751.77 (In accordance with current spending restrictions, if the appointment is an internal promotion, the position will be filled at the minimum of the pay grade or up to 5% of the employee’s current rate, whichever higher.)

POSITION DESCRIPTION :

This is a highly responsible position in the criminal justice system. The employee is expected to perform all duties in the finest, most responsible manner, demonstrate leadership by being a positive role model for staff, youth and the community, and treat all persons with dignity and respect.

  • Responsible for adhering to agency or facility policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for youth, staff and self.
  • Create an atmosphere with zero tolerance for detained youth escapes, abuse, sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct by staff; address Red Flag Behavior.
  • Assist in the operation of a secure detention center to ensure custody and constitutional rights with focus on legal, medical and mental health considerations.
  • Assist the supervisor to ensure services and programming comply with court orders, departmental policies and QA standards.
  • Complete training to maintain proficiency in dispensing medications; distribute medication when needed in absence of medical staff.
  • Perform duties in Master Control, admissions, releases, and transportation as necessary.
  • Supervise youth in activities; use appropriate means (verbal or Protective Action Response) to maintain control in accordance with policies.
  • Inspect facility, youth, visitors and packages for contraband.
  • Train staff on duties and policies; orient new employees.
  • Act as supervisor in their absence.

Additional duties:

  • Write reports and maintain records; document violations and incidents; prepare youth for court appearances and coordinate transportation to medical, justice or social service facilities as needed.
  • Use security and emergency equipment to ensure safety of youth and facility.
  • Complete regular checks (e.g., 10-minute, 5-minute, or constant sight supervision) for confined or at-risk youth.
  • Assess information in the Juvenile Justice Information System and maintain detainee counts as directed.
  • Attend and complete required training; respond to emergencies with CPR, AED and First Aid as trained.
  • Maintain a valid Driver License and report changes as required.
  • Comply with all requirements of relevant Florida statutes and departmental policies.

KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports and records.
  • Ability to work effectively with youth, co-workers, supervisors and the public.
  • Knowledge of good hygiene and facility policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions promptly.
  • Ability to assess appropriate levels of force.
  • Ability to observe changes in youth behavior and provide constructive feedback.
  • Knowledge of housekeeping practices to maintain sanitary facility conditions.

SPECIAL NOTES :

  • All prospective candidates will be subject to sex offender checks, criminal background checks, and pre-employment drug screening for direct care positions.
  • DJJ participates in E-Verify (Employment Eligibility).
  • Valid driver's license required; discuss licensure specifics if out of state.
  • Some assignments require transporting youth with a valid license and acceptable driving record.
  • Certification in DJJ direct care training policy or obtaining certification within 180 days of employment may be required.
