Primary
Purpose:
Provide intervention for students identified with dyslexia. Screen and treat students with dyslexia by providing instructional strategies that use individualized, intensive, multisensory, phonetic methods and a variety of writing and spelling components described in the Dyslexia Handbook. To provide a written report/portfolio of student's dyslexia testing. To conduct assessment for students with dyslexia. To be knowledgeable of federal, state and district guidelines.
Qualifications:
* Hold a teacher certification
* Have experience and training in the area of dyslexia
* Prove ability to work with students, parents, peers, and superiors
* Have an understanding of and sensitivity for the various cultural needs of the students and the district
* Training/certificate of a reading program that outlines and follows descriptors stated in the State Dyslexia Handbook
Education/Certification:
* Bachelor's degree from accredited university
* Valid Texas Teachers Certificate
* CALT/LDT preferred
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
* Knowledge of the descriptors of dyslexia outlined by TEA Dyslexia Handbook
* Knowledge in the instruction/program for dyslexia students
* Knowledge in the assessments for dyslexia identification
* Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation, as required by IDEA.
* Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
* General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
* Ability to conduct instruction, attend meetings and professional development in a virtual environment
Experience:
* Experience of effective teaching in Reading.
* Experience working with students with characteristics of dysgraphia, dyslexia, and/or related disorders
Major
Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies:
1. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop an educational plan (Section 504 or IEP) for each student assigned.
2. Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
3. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
4. Participate in ARD/504 Committee meetings on a regular basis.
5. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
6. Plan and supervise assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s).
7. Use technology in teaching/learning process.
Student Growth and Development:
8. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
9. Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.
Classroom Management and Organization:
10. Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and
emotional development of students.
11. Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior.
12. Consult district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal
needs of students.
13. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and
facilities.
14. Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
Communication:
15. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students,
principals, and teachers.
16. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
17. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Program Management:
18. Assist in organizing and/or conducting training which will facilitate the implementation of the
Dyslexia Program.
19. Assist in the development of budget needs for the Dyslexia Program through the communication of
campus needs.
20. Assume the responsibility for the placement and inventory of materials for the Campus Dyslexia
Program.
21. Maintain all necessary student records required by the Dyslexia Program.
22. Responsible for student assessment for the purpose of identification for dyslexia.
23. Present a Parent Dyslexia Awareness Meeting annually.
24. Assist campus with the understanding of dyslexia characteristics and provide guidance, training
and/or resources to parents, teachers, and administrators.
Other:
25. Stay abreast of current research and development in dyslexia, dysgraphia and research-based reading programs.
26. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
27. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
