SUMMARY:

The Senior Staff Accountant supports the Credit Union’s financial integrity by performing advanced accounting duties, maintaining accurate general ledger records, preparing reconciliations and financial reports, supporting month-end and year-end close processes, and ensuring compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, internal controls, and Credit Union policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepare, post, and review journal entries; perform account analysis; and complete assigned reconciliations in support of the monthly close process.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, budget variance reports, and reporting packages for management and the Board of Directors.
  • Analyze financial data, research variances, and provide timely, accurate information to support sound business decisions.
  • Reconcile fixed asset records to the general ledger and financial statements; maintain the fixed asset subledger by recording additions, disposals, and transfers.
  • Prepare regulatory filings, including the quarterly NCUA 5300 Call Report, and support compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare property tax returns and maintain supporting schedules and documentation.
  • Prepare audit schedules, reports, and work papers; assist internal and external auditors and regulatory examiners as requested.
  • Research and resolve account discrepancies, reconciling items, and accounting issues in a timely manner.
  • Recommend and support process improvements, automation, and other initiatives that improve the efficiency and accuracy of month-end, quarterly, and annual close processes.
  • Maintain the accuracy and integrity of assigned balance sheet, income statement, and general ledger accounts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Three to five years of progressive accounting experience required; experience within a credit union, bank, or other financial institution preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook; ability to learn and effectively use accounting systems and credit union software.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, financial reporting, account reconciliation, internal controls, and GAAP.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, work independently, and collaborate effectively with Accounting Department staff, management, auditors, examiners, and other departments.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and the ability to apply accounting principles to complex transactions and reconciliations.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable in a fast-paced, evolving environment; able to work independently or as part of a team to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Professional communication skills and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across departments.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional organization, accuracy, and attention to detail.
