The Structural Engineer will support the planning, design, and evaluation of structures for utility and industrial facilities, including electric substations, steel mill infrastructure, and natural gas regulator and metering stations. This role requires the ability to work independently on moderately complex engineering tasks while collaborating closely with senior engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary design teams. The position is ideal for a technically capable engineer with approximately two (2) years of relevant experience in the utility and industrial sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, and concrete masonry structures for utility and industrial facilities.
  • Design foundations, steel framing, equipment supports, control buildings, and miscellaneous structural components for electric substations, gas regulator stations, and industrial plants.
  • Evaluate existing structures and foundations for equipment upgrades, expansion, or life-extension projects.
  • Apply applicable codes and standards, including AISC, ACI, ASCE, IBC, and utility-specific design criteria.
  • Prepare calculations, sketches, and design narratives to support engineering decisions.

Project Support & Coordination

  • Coordinate structural designs with electrical, mechanical, civil, and piping disciplines.
  • Support construction activities by responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and providing field observations as required.
  • Assist with cost estimates, schedules, and constructability reviews.
  • Participate in client meetings and technical discussions under the guidance of senior engineering staff.

Documentation & Deliverables

  • Develop and review construction drawings, structural details, and specifications.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet quality control procedures, project requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain accurate and well-organized project documentation.

Safety & Compliance

  • Incorporate safety-in-design principles related to industrial and utility environments.
  • Support compliance with OSHA, utility owner standards, and industry best practices.
  • Consider environmental loads, seismic requirements, and operational constraints in all designs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Approximately 2-10 years of structural engineering experience, with a strong focus on utility and industrial facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Steel Structures
    • Concrete Foundations
    • Electric Substations (control buildings, equipment foundations)
    • Steel mill or heavy industrial structures
    • Natural gas regulator and metering stations
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software (e.g., STAAD, SAP
    2000, RISA, RAM, or similar).
  • Experience producing construction drawings using AutoCAD and/or Micro Station.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. structural design codes and standards.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Surveying

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT)
  • Experience working directly with utility owners and industrial clients
  • Familiarity with retrofit and brownfield projects.
  • Knowledge of equipment-induced loading in industrial environments.
  • Field experience supporting construction, commissioning, or inspections.

Competencies & Attributes

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality.
  • Practical understanding of constructability and field conditions.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the confidence to work under direction from supervisors.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to project sites as needed.

Career Growth

  • Increasing technical responsibility
  • Progression toward an Intermediate Structural Engineer role or Project Manager
  • Exposure to large-scale utility and industrial infrastructure projects
  • Professional licensure support and mentoring
