JOB TITLE:

INTERPRETER FOR DEAF/HARD OF HEARING PROGRAM

REPORTS TO:

Certified staff member for Deaf/Hard of Hearing or NISEC Administrator MAJOR FUNCTION:
Facilitate communication among hearing impaired students and their hearing peers, the classroom registered staff members, and other personnel in the school system. REQUIREMENTS:

A. High school diploma

  • Previous interpreting experience
  • Pass NISEC interpreting screening
  • Completion of an interpreter preparation program or equivalent
  • experience required

  • Ability to interpret and transliterate (expressive and sign-to-spoken English) at a normal conversational rate, American Sign Language, and manually coded English required
  • A minimum of an associate degree or equivalent preferred.
  • TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    Contract for school year; follow school calendar and school hours where office is located.

    All other working terms and conditions of employment are established by the Board of Managers.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Perform all duties of the interpreter’s functions as required by the NISEC, including:

  • Provide expressive and voice interpreting (may include American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign English and Signing Exact English, a form of manually coded English, and/or oral interpreting) for students with hearing impairments in general education classes at a language level appropriate for the student
  • Arrange the best possible interpreter location to interpret every class activity, including discussion, films, lectures, excursions, questions and answers
  • Serve as a liaison between the student with a hearing impairment, classmates, instructors and the administrative staff by:
    • Encouraging students to work directly with the classroom registered staff member;
    • Re familiarizing the classroom registered staff member with the role of the interpreter in the classroom, coordinating identification of note takers when appropriate, and encouraging good relationships among the students; and
    • Promoting the integration of students into all class activities
    • Keep a daily notebook/calendar which may include class assignments, a note of material
  • covered in class, materials and equipment needed for future classes, and specific new

    vocabulary

  • Participate in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress on the IEP, providing insight on the success of communication strategies designed
  • Provide interpreting for extracurricular activities and parent meetings when necessary and when appropriately scheduled during school time.

    The option of additional interpreting after school is available with compensation.
  • Work cooperatively with other interpreters to assure the interpreter's schedule with students and difficulty of classes is evenly distributed, and providing predetermined breaks for another interpreter
  • Preview movies and/or taped materials to determine if it is closed captioned
  • Assist the registered staff member(s) by providing tutoring for student(s) as deemed necessary
  • Provide instructional tutoring support by obtaining and reviewing all textbooks and supplementary materials required for classwork, developing and reviewing vocabulary lists, using comprehensive note-taking strategies and supplementary study and review sessions
  • Arrive at assigned place on time and stay entire time or until replaced
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Code of Ethics of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and a general knowledge of the educational process, deafness, and the growth and development of children and language
  • Other duties as assigned
  • EVALUATION:

    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board of Managers policy on evaluation of confidential personnel.
