The Assistant Head Swim Team Coach leads the development, organization, and implementation of a comprehensive, high-quality swim team program that fosters team spirit, individual growth, and a lifelong love for swimming. This role is responsible for designing training plans, mentoring assistant coaches, and ensuring a safe, inclusive, and positive experience for all participants. The Assistant Head Coach collaborates closely with the Aquatics Director and Head Swim Team Coach to meet program goals, manage operations, and uphold the YMCA’s mission and values.

Salary is $19.50 per hour

Scope Of Responsibilities
  • Serve as a point of contact in the absence of the Head Swim Team Coach.
  • Assist Head Swim Team Coach with administrative duties. e.g. Sports Engine, parent emails, and roster tracking.
  • Develop and implement age‑appropriate training plans that support swimmer growth across all skill levels.
  • Provide consistent, constructive feedback to athletes to enhance performance, technique, and confidence.
  • Create and maintain seasonal plans, including practice schedules, meet calendars, and performance goals.
  • Oversee and schedule assistant coaches, ensuring proper coverage and quality instruction at all practices and meets.
  • Support program operations, including registration, billing, and fee collection, in coordination with the Aquatics Director.
  • Maintain accurate records for attendance, meet results, and participant progress.
  • Foster positive communication and collaboration with swimmers, families, and staff.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for parents, addressing questions and concerns in a professional and timely manner.
  • Recruit, train, and support assistant coaches and parent volunteers.
  • Uphold YMCA and USA Swimming standards for safety and supervision; respond effectively to all emergency situations.
  • Ensure proper use and care of facilities and equipment, promptly reporting any concerns or maintenance needs.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and certification renewals as required.
  • Promote the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director and Head Swim Team Coach.
Minimum And

Preferred Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all swimmers.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
  • Demonstrates evidence of YMCA Team competencies in previous experience or practice.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
    Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 1–3 years of experience in competitive swimming and/or coaching.
  • Strong technical knowledge of swimming strokes, rules, and training methodologies.
  • Proven ability to motivate, lead, and develop athletes and staff.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create a positive and inclusive team culture aligned with YMCA values.
  • Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED, USA Swimming and Safety Training for Swim Coaches (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • YMCA Principles of Swimming and Diving certification (preferred or must be obtained within 3 months).
Child Abuse Prevention
  • Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor.
  • Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.
  • Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.
  • Completing all child abuse prevention training as required.
