Description
This is technical work in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant.
Responsibilities- Monitors the operation of wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery on an assigned shift to ensure that plant effluent meets the state and federal guidelines for purity.
- Operates equipment such as bar screens, grit collectors, clarifiers, chlorinators, air diffusers, digesters, boilers compressors, generators, blowers, gates, pumps and valves.
- Changes out chemical containers and works on UV equipment.
- Reads charts, gauges, meters and graphs and records data regarding wastewater and sludge at various stages in the treatment process.
- Posts and maintains daily log sheets and changes recording charts on meters and control panels.
- Collects samples and conducts standard laboratory tests such as dissolved oxygen, BOD, fecal chloroform, suspended solids, volatile solids, pH, ammonia; makes adjustments in the treatment process based upon test results.
- Performs visual, auditory and tactile inspections of pumps, motors and bearings to ensure proper operation. Greases, lubricates and performs other preventative maintenance on plant equipment and machinery.
- Attends training seminars and conferences to keep abreast of new techniques and procedures in wastewater treatment.
- Requires regular and prompt attendance, plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team.
- Cleans buildings and equipment. Cuts grass and maintains grounds.
- Performs minor repairs to equipment and machinery.
- Conducts tours of the plant.
- Performs related work as required.
- Performs other tasks as directed.
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.
Knowledge, Skills, And AbilitiesConsiderable knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. Considerable knowledge of federal and state environmental laws and guidelines relating to wastewater treatment and wastewater plant operations. Considerable knowledge of the potential hazards and safety precautions involved in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery. Ability to operate a variety of pumping, treatment and control equipment, to detect problems in operation and to take corrective action.
Ability to read meters, gauges, graphs and charts accurately and to maintain operational records. Ability to conduct standard laboratory tests and maintain basic laboratory records. Ability to operate the plant computer system. Ability to maintain effective communications and working relationships with representatives of federal and state regulatory agencies, officials, superiors, fellow employees and the general public.
Work requires frequent performance of physical tasks such as walking over rough surfaces, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, working in restricted and confined spaces, climbing, balancing on ladders and occasionally lifting of light and heavy objects. Work also requires physical dexterity in the frequent use of hand-eye coordination and manipulative skills using fingers, limbs or body for the operation of vehicles, computers, equipment and tools.
WorkingEnvironment
Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Work exposes employee on a daily basis to potential biological and toxic chemical hazards found in sewage and disinfecting chemicals such as chlorine and sulfur dioxide. Work also exposes employee to potential mechanical, electrical and physical hazards on a daily basis when operating wastewater equipment and machinery.
NecessarySpecial Requirements
Valid Alabama Driver's License. Grade II Wastewater Operator Certification must be obtained within the initial 24 months of employment. The City of Cullman reserves the right to terminate employment if this certification is not obtained within the initial 24 month period. (In order to obtain this certification, the City of Cullman will pay for four tests within the 24‑month time frame).
