Job Goals:

  • To provide outstanding maintenance services for school system facilities and structures.
  • To assist in maintaining school system facilities to provide supportive work and learning environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, trade school diploma, or GED.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the designated trade/skill area or a combination of training/experience.
  • Experience in school facility maintenance preferred.
  • Possess and maintain appropriate State or National card, certification or licensure for the assigned trade or skill area.
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. .
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated skills using standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the assigned trade or skill area.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of specific trades.
  • Ability to read and follow plans, directions, and layouts.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to make estimates of time and material needed for efficient project completion.
  • Ability to climb and work from scaffolding, ladders, and heights.
  • Ability to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching.
  • Strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.
  • Ability to work in locations involving heights or confined spaces.
  • Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, and inclement weather.
  • Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays if necessary.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Provide basic hand tools for assigned duties.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.

  • Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities.
  • Constructs, maintains, services, inspects, and repairs of school system structures as assigned.
  • Maintains and repairs items or systems in assigned skill or trade area; performs inspections, diagnoses of issues requiring attention, and executes needed repairs or maintenance.
  • Keeps service truck washed as needed and serviced at intervals established by the Transportation Department.
  • Maintains accurate inventories of supplies and equipment assigned to service truck.
  • Estimates materials and/or number of workers needed for completion of jobs.
  • Requisition s supplies and equipment needed to carry out assignments and perform duties.
  • Completes work order assignments without close supervision, efficiently and neatly; completes all projects in compliance with trade standards.
  • Prioritizes tasks and uses time wisely.
  • Uses problem-solving skills, sound judgment, and effective interpersonal skills to supervise other designated maintenance personnel when assigned.
  • Engages in work-related training to increase knowledge and skills as directed and/or for advancement.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, and constructive feedback in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
