The Motor Vehicle Mechanic repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks, or tractors. The role involves diagnosing, analyzing, and troubleshooting vehicle malfunctions, maintaining and repairing government vehicles, and ensuring all equipment is safe and dependable.
Essential Responsibilities- Maintain and repair government vehicles, completing maintenance tickets and repair orders promptly.
- Treat and dispose of waste materials in accordance with regulations and applicable laws.
- Inspect, diagnose, and isolate vehicle and equipment malfunctions; troubleshoot, trace, and locate defects or causes of mechanical problems.
- Repair all assigned vehicles and equipment, including lighting systems, sirens, wheel bearings, radiators, heating and air‑conditioning systems, springs, hydraulic systems, catalytic converters, and fuel pumps.
- Utilize on‑board computer diagnostic systems and test equipment to evaluate automotive control and emission systems.
- Interact with customers, keeping them informed of vehicle status and needed repairs.
- Inspect and test equipment for mechanical defects, replace worn parts, and flush radiators with antifreeze.
- Perform oil changes, check fluids, diagnose tread wear, replace batteries, and conduct engine tune‑ups.
- Armort vehicles and install new equipment such as radios, sirens, wire cages, and lights as directed.
- Conduct state vehicle safety and emission inspections on owned vehicles.
- Identify necessary parts, equipment, and supplies; estimate cost and labor time for corrective repairs.
- Respond to emergency road calls for disabled vehicles, make minor adjustments, or coordinate towing for repairs.
- Conduct road tests during and after maintenance/repair work.
- Respond to emails and telephone calls; ensure vehicle provision and support for customers.
- Enforce a safety culture by completing training requirements, participating in emergency response tasks, and serving on safety committees.
- Uphold quality standards by complying with the company’s Quality Policy and customer contracts and following all operational, safety, quality, and environmental procedures.
- Read, understand, and implement all relevant operational, safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least 3 years of experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide variety of light, medium, heavy, and specialized automotive equipment, heavy equipment, and FAV vehicles.
- Valid and current state driver’s license.
- Knowledge of gasoline and diesel preventive maintenance programs.
- Excellent safety record and knowledge of safety standards for motor vehicle mechanical and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with operating systems in motor vehicles and equipment; knowledge of maintenance and diagnostic practices.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical and related malfunctions.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals, references, and specifications.
- Experience writing routine correspondence, maintenance logs, and order forms.
- Proficiency with forklifts, power tools, wrenches, diagnostic equipment, and jacks.
- Ability to complete paperwork associated with vehicle maintenance and repairs.
- Strong hand‑tool and hydraulic equipment skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization; U.S. citizenship required for facility credentials.
- Successful completion of a pre‑employment drug screen and government background check, including national agency check within 60 days of hire if required.
- Availability for any shift, willing to work weekends and other hours as needed.
- Proficient in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.
