The Curriculum Specialist for K‑12 Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Family Life and Driver Education provides instructional leadership and support to certified teachers, classified staff, and administrators in Culpeper County Public Schools. This role designs, develops, pilots, implements, and evaluates programs related to these content areas, supporting staff, administrators, and community partners. The position is based at the Central Office but will spend most of the time in schools, serving as a resource.
EssentialJob Functions
- Serve as the state contact person (SSWS) in all applicable content areas and compile required state reports.
- Provide instructional coaching, mentoring, and curriculum development, including assessment evaluation and modeling instructional strategies.
- Support teachers and administrators by implementing best‑practice instruction, developing and leading workshops and in‑services, facilitating staff development opportunities, and assisting with new teacher induction.
- Assist school administrators with classroom observations and interpretation of standards.
- Meet regularly with content leaders for each assignment area.
- Work with high school counseling directors to confirm locally verified social‑study credits for students.
- Maintain current information on the Virginia Standards of Learning, school improvement plans, graduation requirements, and directives relevant to assigned content areas.
- Attend state and regional meetings and local/regional curricular projects to advance instructional practices.
- Attend professional association meetings such as VSSLC, VAHPERD, and VADETS.
- Facilitate state and locally mandated meetings, including the Family Life Committee and Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PFSTD).
- Participate as a member of the Student Health Advisory Board (SHAB).
- Coordinate online driver education permit testing processes.
- Ensure compliance with instructionally‑based legislative requirements for all content areas, including CPR/AED/First Aid, Title IX, and non‑CTE Service Learning.
- Facilitate the utilization of curriculum and resource guides.
- Maintain websites for content area responsibilities, provide professional development opportunities, and track completion in Performance Matters.
- Help plan and support field trips for assigned curricular areas.
- Organize textbook review and adoption processes.
- Assist with the selection and integration of ancillary materials.
- Assist with curricular assessment and monitoring by interpreting system‑wide data to identify instructional needs and aid in developing division assessments and monitoring forms.
- Facilitate the development and utilization of curriculum, pacing, and resource guides in line with revised standards and mandates.
- Participate in walkthroughs and classroom observations.
- Communicate openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff, and Division administration as a positive representative of Culpeper County Schools.
- Perform other assigned duties.
- Hold a Virginia teaching license and be highly qualified.
- Master’s degree or doctoral degree preferably in Educational Leadership.
- Have successful classroom teaching experience (secondary and/or social studies preferred).
- Have knowledge of content areas for which the applicant is applying.
- Possess leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working successfully with staff members and parents.
- Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
