Curriculum Specialist for K-12 Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Family Life and Driver Education
The Curriculum Specialist for K-12 Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Family Life and Driver Education provides instructional leadership and support to certified teachers, classified staff, and administrators in Culpeper County Public Schools. This job requires the design, development, pilot, implementation, and evaluation of programs related to the content areas. This work directly supports internal staff and administration and community partners.
Located at the Central Office, but most work will be done in schools with teachers, serving as a resource.
Essential Job Functions:
- Serve as the state contact person (SSWS) in all applicable content areas; compile state reports, as required, including Driver Education and Wellness data;
- Provide instructional coaching and mentoring to include curriculum development and modifications, assessment evaluations, and modeling instructional strategies;
- Provide instructional support for teachers and administrators by assisting in the implementation of best practice instruction, developing and leading workshops and in-services, facilitating staff development opportunities, and assisting with new teacher induction;
- Provide assistance to school administrators with classroom observations or interpretations of standards;
- Meet regularly with content leaders in each content area of assignment;
- Work with high school counseling directors to confirm locally verified social studies credits for students;
- Maintain current information on the Virginia Standards of Learning, school improvement, graduation requirements, and directives as they relate to assigned content areas;
- Attend state and regional meetings in the interest of improving instructional practices for the Division;
- Attend state and regional meetings and local/regional curricular projects in the interest of improving instructional practices for the Divisions.
- Attend professional association meetings, to include, but not limited to, VSSLC (Virginia Social Studies Leadership Consortium), VAHPERD (Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance), and VADETS (Virginia Association of Driver Education and Traffic Safety)
- Facilitate state and locally mandated meetings, such as the Family Life Committee and Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PFSTD).
- Participate as a member of the Student Health Advisory Board (SHAB);
- Coordinate processes for online driver education permit testing;
- Ensure compliance with instructionally-based legislative requirements for all content areas, to include, but not limited to CPR/AED/First Aid, Title IX, Non-CTE Service Learning
- Facilitate the utilization of curriculum and resource guides;
- Maintain websites for content area responsibilities, provides professional development opportunities and tracks completion in Performance Matters;
- Help plan and support field trips for assigned curricular areas;
- Organize textbook review(s) and adoption(s);
- Assist with the selection and integration of ancillary materials;
- Provide instructional support for teachers and administrators by assisting in the implementation of best practice instruction, developing and leading workshops and in-services, facilitating staff development opportunities, and assisting with new teacher induction;
- Assist with curricular assessment and monitoring by interpreting system-wide data to identify county instructional needs and assist in developing division assessments and monitoring forms;
- Facilitates the development and utilization of curriculum, pacing, and resource guides in line with revised standards and mandates;
- Participate in walkthroughs and classroom observations;
- Communicate openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff, and Division administration as a positive representative of Culpeper County School system; and
- Performs other assigned duties.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work:
- Hold a Virginia teaching license and be highly qualified;
- Master's degree or doctoral degree preferably in Educational Leadership;
